Save Button image - suggestions please

For years I've been putting little images on my buttons. Picture of a printer for the print button. Picture of a wrench for the tool s. You know what I mean.

But for years my 'Save' button has been a little 3.5 inch floppy disk.

I can't remember the last time I actually saw a floppy disk. I moved house 5 years ago and didn't bring a single disk with me.

Surely there's users of my software who look at that button wondering what the heck it is ?

Short of writing the word "Save" on the button does anyone have a suggestion what simple image to put on the save button ?

ps. Quite big buttons. 42x42 quite handy for touch applications

The floppy diskette is universally known as save. It's pretty funny considering that I remember destroying some of my dads floppys as a baby/kid/adult. Take a look at this article on a few other things that are pretty old school. The author suggest using the cloud icon for save.

    Hi,

If you rotate that image 180 degrees then I think you will find that this is still the most widely used Icon for saving something in the Windows environment. I would not worry too much about it if I were you.

    Cheers,

    Ian

Thank Ian - Don't worry. I'm not losing any sleep over it.

More of a light hearted thread this so all suggestions welcome - the wackier the better.

Something else you have to think of is why the floppy diskette was chosen for the save icon. It's how people saved their junk. Try replacing it with a USB or maybe an External Hard Drive.

As in the very old joke Jesus saves, but [insert favourite football (soccer) star here] nets the rebound! I was gonna suggest a goalkeeper myself but it's not really the same kind of save; prevention not preservation. I doubt that the floppy is going away as the universal symbol any time soon precisely because it's so difficult to think of anything to replace it. The key to iconography is after all familiarity rather than exact representation. The historical foundations of many widely used symbols are long forgotten but their iconic power remains.
