[RESOLVED] Parental Controls/ Web Filtering
Hi,
Can anyone give me any advice on blocking website under Windows? I have tried the built-in Parental Controls feature but there does not seem to be anywhere to restrict what sites can be viewed and the sites that can not be viewed. However, if there is a better solution for the parental controls that includes web filtering, etc please suggest.
Thanks,
Nightwalker

If it was for me I would probably agree! This is for a client who is not very computer savvy.

You said "I" in your first post so I thought it is for you.

Well, I have tried the above but can not figure it out! I was setting up the software for someone else but he is the person that will be in control of it after I do the initial setup. I have no experience in the "Parent Guidance" area since I do not have kids.

There is no hope for you - or whoever you are helping. You can get the most insanely inappropriate images from just twitter or flickr - they allow anything to be posted - and found if you know the right keywords.
What does this person you are helping hope to block?

Porn, violence that type of thing! Yes, he is aware that those type of things are even alluded to in the music video his grandchildren like to watch. Also, I explained to him that even using a search engine to search for something that seems innocent might not be because some **** thinks in it cool to link a misspelled word with violence or porn.

I have not yet used this software, but you could try and see what it is all about.

PS: The only real parental control, is the parent.

I have not used it either although, I could probably set it up for him next time I see him. Do you have any application ideas? I don't know whether or not the client would be comfortable with that. Just covering the bases in-case he wants to uninstall the program at some point.

Re: Parental Controls/ Web Filtering
Thanks! I will show that to the client next time I see him.
Edit:
Also, going back to the Parental Controls feature within Windows does anyone know how to setup websites/internet restrictions? I can find information on the other parental control stuff such as restricting access to files but not access to websites.

Re: Parental Controls/ Web Filtering
I have tried setting up the service recommend by Justa Lol! However, the client's system is not saving the DNS server addresses I specify by rather obtaining the ip address automatically. The client is using Windows 7 with Internet Explorer10.
Edit:
I'll investigate the host file thing a bit more too! Hopefully, Blocking Unwanted Connections with a Hosts File have some more hints on how to achieve what I am after using the host file.
Edit II:
I am currently looking at the Windows Live Family Safety Filter to see how good that is.
Edit III:
I have installed the Live Family Safety Filter and applied it to a test account I setup, here are the instructions I followed. I tested using pron as the keyword while searching and the results were listed but access to the individual sites was denied as well as the images and video searching being pixelated too. How to teenager-proof a Windows 7 PC provides detailed description of how to set up WLFSF. PicBlock is a useful program to use in conjunction with Live Family Safety Filter as it blocks pornographic images on website (not sure what else it does).
