[RESOLVED] Computer won't boot up after I took out memory chip and put it back in

A neighbor gave me his computer and when I went to try it out I discovered it didn't have any memory cards in it. So, I took a memory card from one of my computers and put it in it. I fired it up and then discovered the hard drive didn't have an OS on it. So, I decided not to mess with it and so I took out the memory card and put it back in my computer. Now my computer won't do anything. When I turn it on all I get is a series of beeps from the BIOS. No video so I can't see what the problem is. I know the monitor is good, I know the memory card is good and I know I put it back in correctly and I know the hard drive is good because I can test all these on another computer I have and they all work.

I seem to remember that the beeps are telling me something what might be the problem. So, my question is does anyone know what these beeps mean?

Here is what I get:

long Beep - short pause - two short beeps - long pause - two short beeps - short pause - one short beep

You do know that's Morse code for DIE, right?

Yeah, it was until I figured it out....


long beep, short pause, 2 short beeps means "hey, your video card ain't working"

So, I put in another video card from another computer I don't use any more and everything booted up and it works fine now.

the beeps at the beggining of startup means that your video card or RAM is not in your mother board properly

I've had that happen to me... while messing with the RAM, I bumped the video card just enough to knock it out... pulling it and re-seating it worked.

I guess that is what happened. I didn't take it out I just pushed on it to make sure it was nice and snug in the slots but that didn't help any (I guess I could have done what you did but I didn't). After several attempts to no avail I just pulled it out and put in another card and that made it work again.
