    Re: vb6 licensed product

    16. DOWNGRADE. You may install and use this version and an earlier version of the software at the same time. This
agreement applies to your use of the earlier version. If the earlier version includes different components, any terms for
those components in the agreement that comes with the earlier version apply to your use of them. Microsoft is not
obligated to supply earlier versions to you.

@dillante = so if ever i have 2008 i still need the base license for the previous product.

anyone knows a downgrade path for any Visual Studio right now?

    Re: vb6 licensed product

As far as I can recall the meaning is something like "if your version of Visual Studio has the product then you can use an earlier version" where "product" here might mean Visual Basic. However components in VS 6.0 might have different individual redistribution terms and such for components that differ.

So VS 2008 having VB.Net might cover VS 6.0 which has VB6. I'm pretty sure people have done this in the past with earlier VS versions like 2005, 2003.

But Microsoft is not necessarily going to provide the installation files or media or the required product keys used for installation.

yeah, your right, and this here is my exact problem.

going today i might by a visual studio 2010 just for a right to use vb6, but i find the MS statement unclear. if ill be having my 2010 downgraded to 2008, then from there ill be stuck, not having an clear path to vb6

Going back to the MS statement, i can use vb6 from a downgrade but they wont allow keys or installer, so how am i supposed to get that. heh^_^

express editions are free, still the last legacy version offered at Msdn is vb 2008.

    Re: vb6 licensed product

no... buying and installing VS2010 doesn't give you the right to use VB6... mostly because VS2010 DOES NOT INCLUDE VB6... that "downgrade" option you quoted means that if I have VS2008, I can STILL install VS2010 AND USE BOTH... that's it. Nothing more. Nothing less.

The VB6 line and the current VB.NET lines are completely different products. So if you want to use VB6, doesn't matter if you have VS2010 or VS2008 or no VS installed... you will still need to buy VB6 somewhere (it's getting harder to find as it's no longer supported by MS) and install it.

I believe you can still get it via a subscription, but that would mean a pretty massive cost if that is the only value you would get from the subscription.

Open licensing people said i can have it as a downgrade for an OLP version of Visual Studio Pro, and im still trying to get a reference for what they are saying. if thats the case they say all downgrade path from visual studio are available on the open license media kit. the media kit isnt available for viewing for those that have no account in MS they say, so that frustrates me as i want to know all about the product i may be buying.

FPP and OEM products of VS doesnt support downgrades they say.

MSDN subscription is also another way but a costly one, still i have to see if its true.

so its rather Ebay for me, or wait till they come up with a reference.

even the people from open licensing are confused now ^_^,what they say > well you cant have a downgrade right for vs 2006, but you can have a download right for vb 6 enterprise if you have an msdn subscription...

"well you cant have a downgrade right for vs 2006" --- right, that's what I said. (only there's no such thing as VS2006)
"you can have a download right for vb 6 enterprise if you have an msdn subscription --- right, that's what Shaggy said...

I don't know what more we can tell you. In order to install VB6, you're going to need to purchase it somehow... eBay, other retailers, or through an MSDN Subscription... You're definitely not going to find it for free (and if you do, it's probably from a dodgy source). And the purchase of a newer version of VS isn't going to include it, let alone include a licence to use it.

Waiting will get you nowhere. The availability of VB6 is going to decrease, if anything. Don't expect MS to change that in any way.

    Re: vb6 licensed product

is this the link for vs 2006 or 6.0 http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms950417.aspx ?

ok ima go get some msdn subscription with the vs. its costly but to think of it, i can get vs2010 and vb6 altogether for a double price of an ebay price of vb6 only... with the subsription, i think i can also get legacy languages/softwares.

    Thanks TG, Thanks Shaggy

VS 6.0, there is no 2006!

    Only, VB1-6, VB.NET 2002, 2005, 2008, 2010. Although, there will be VS 11 (2012) being released sometime.

    2010 is pretty good.

With a subscription you get all kinds of things. Whether those things are actually useful is another question entirely.

    Re: vb6 licensed product

Again Thanks to the people who help me with this thread.

    I got the subscription now.
    so to close the thread,

if anyone want to have a licensed vb 6.0 without going through online market such as Ebay, you have to have an msdn subscription included on your visual studio that allows you to download vb 6.0 enterprise(Not Professional) and a lot of both legacy and new MS softwares. And be sure you ask your license specialist before getting a subscription.

for more information visit the msdn site.

    Thanks All.
