It's that time of year again... iPad 3, Apple TV 3
- iPad 3 $499 16GB, $599 32GB, $699 64GB
- 2048x1536 264 PPI display
- A5X: dual-core Cortex A9 w/ quad-core graphics. Either an SGX543MP4 or SGX554MP4.
- 1GB of RAM. (Not announced, but true.)
- Same cameras as 4S but at 5mp.
- 4G LTE
- Same 10 hour battery life, 9 on 4G
http://www.apple.com/ipad/
There's two videos of it also on the above link, which show iPhoto for iPad in action. It's $5 and looks pretty neat.
- Apple TV 3 $99
- 1080p iTunes content, new app-like UI
- Can now stream movies from iCloud directly to Apple TV. (Unrelated to Apple TV, is the fact you can now re-download your movies that you've bought from iTunes.)
- Definitely dual-core.
Will be picking up both. Sold my first gen iPad ready for this.

iPad3:
- sensational screen (most of laptops killer)
- awesome graphics
- disappointing processor
- still no support for sd card
Original iPad owners consider to upgrade; for iPad2 owners not much to consider (other than screen it could be 4G LTE option).

The processor will be fine. Quad-core is good, but only really useful in games where you can make use of all the cores, but those same tasks applied to the CPU can be done on the GPU as well. Apple will likely do a quad-core Cortex A15 next year, with the iPad 4. That will be a significant improvement -- in large part to the architecture.
I'm hoping the A5X will be clocked at 1.5GHz, but more realistically it's likely to be 1.2GHz.

Interesting that they're introducing LTE on the iPad before the iPhone...

And the LTE won't work on the current Telstra LTE network, due to differing frequencies.

Also note that there is no "iPad 3". The device is "The new iPad".

It's the third iPad, so it's iPad 3. They refer to it as the new iPad, but it's still the third or third generation iPad. They also refer to it as the latter for identification purposes.

Perhaps the iPhone 5 will have an 1800MHz radio. Curious strategy though.

I guess you can't fathom the magical retina display
That aside, it's going to be $100 cheaper than the TF700 which will only have a 1200p display. I'd say it's priced quite well.

After a year with an iPad2 I still can't see a need or use for it. My wife uses it for email instead of turning on her computer. But what else is it good for Absoultely Nothing.

I do to know how to use a cell phone. You get one, plug it into the phone jack in the wall, and then dial numbers.
So there, ha!

But that is my point to me it is an over priced toy. If I had not won one at an SQL Server conference I would not spend the money on it. Maybe some one loves them. They will love all things Apple also. But I still see it as an over priced toy. Can't even print with it. So if I get an email I need to print out as a receipt I still need to go to my PC and open the email to get the thing as a hard copy. So to be it even defeats my wife use for email some of the time at least.

Gary:
you can print directly from iPad - just google it for many different solutions.
A lot people don't accept (or maybe not aware?) the fact that tablets in general are Personal Computers that allow doing just about everything (this part will vary with the price tag) you would do on your desktop/laptop with slightly different approach.

That's completely true... If "just about anything" means listening to music, playing videos, Internet, reading, and playing silly little games and not much more. And even those things can be done much much better on other devices (when not on the street).

Apple (and I) would like to disagree. I've got a printer hooked up to an Ubuntu Server and the default CUPS install supports AirPort out of the box. I have no problems printing over Wi-Fi from an iPhone/iPad to my printer.

It has built in support for compatible printers, however if you don't have a compatible printer you should be able to find an app which supports your printer.

Ok, then please enlighten me. How can tablets be used for anything else than what I've mentioned. Please tell me which engineer will be using CAD software on a tablet, who will be using Office like software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) on a tablet with no physical keyboard and a 10" screen, who will be doing software development on a tablet, how but scientific products like MathLab, or maybe 3D modeling and animation like Maya, 3D Studio Max etc, which graphics artist will be give up hist computer and Photoshop for iPhoto on a tablet, or perhaps gaming other than Angry Birds, for instance Call of Duty, World of Warcraft, etc, how will that be done on a tablet?

Actually, as Ear Worms go it's not a bad one. I once had the Spice Girls, Wannabe floating round my head for days. Trust me, that's what you don't want. It's what you really, really don't want. And now I've thought about it and it's back in my head again. Arrrrghh. Pants!

Fair enough but sooner or later that leg's going to get tired and you'll have to switch.

The iWork suite of apps work quite well and can replace the desktop suite for most, if not all uses. You can optionally connect a keyboard to it wirelessly if you plan on doing a lot of typing and aren't interested in doing it on the virtual keyboard.
There is Adobe Photoshop Touch for iPad, which can be used in place of Photoshop on the desktop for some tasks, but the latter is obviously much more advanced and powerful.
You've got Modern Combat 3 which is the CoD of iOS right now and quite graphically impressive, and also Chaos & Order online which is the WoW of iOS. You've also got two new games coming, Infinity Blade: Dungeons and Sky Gambler, both look quite impressive graphically on iPad 3.
And even better, either use AirPlay to put your games (or apps) on the big screen (720p), or connect it to your HDTV directly with an HDMI cable (1080p) and Apple's 30-pin connector to HDMI accessory.
Check both of these out, they look great:

(Watch this one from 2:20 onward.)
I'd like to see them on a 50 inch 1080p HDTV

There are actually plenty of options. In other thread I already mentioned that MS has fantastic device that was targeting architects, engineers and other creative people - it's a double sided tablet that allows drawing, scetching and many other things.
Unfortunately Mr. Gates killed it (for now) because it didn't have Outlook support (again, at the moment) - in my opinion it's jst a matter of time until something like this appears on the market.
As far as using productivity software (like MS Office) there are plenty of options too - just google it if interested.
All of the above is NOT iPad specific.

Re: It's that time of year again... iPad 3, Apple TV 3
All those are makeshift versions of desktop software that can't begin to compare, function wise or usability wise. I'm sure that there is no sane person who's writes more than half a page per day who would rather do it on a tablet than on a computer. And there's a reason why a keyboard is perpendicular to a screen and it's because of ergonomics. Input and output in the same plane will never work for any prolonged activity.
Don't think I'm just talking here, I have an iPad 2, iPhone 4 and the latest iPod Nano (and a 27" iMac), they work great for what they are, but as a developer, there's no money in this world that will get me to switch a big screen desktop with a physical keyboard/mouse for a touch tablet. There are very little productive/professional scenarios where a tablet would work better.

How is that completely different? You're the one that said that you can do almost anything on a tablet that you can on a PC and you're trying to tell me that just because a tablet has some (very) rudimentary functionality compared to a PC that it's just as good. It's like saying that a pocket knife can be used for shaving just like a razor. I could see Icyculyr trying to make that point, but not you.

Re: It's that time of year again... iPad 3, Apple TV 3
I agree. I understand where Icyculyr is coming from. After all, he's made it clear that if it is Apple, he'll buy it. That's fine with me. I'm about to shell out some cash for a water filter because it's four ounces lighter than the one I have, and I'm also considering about $160 for a mattress that saves about the same amount. It may be that most fanatics are just plain nuts, it's just a matter of what you are fanatical about.
Still, the argument seems to be a bunch of "Look, you actually CAN use this for something similar to what you would use a desktop for!" You want games? You can play games. Yes, they aren't the games you actually WANT to play, but they are close. You want productivity software? There are programs that are similar to what you use elsewhere. As long as you add some extra hardware, you can use the same...on a screen FAR smaller than the old 17" monitors that we moved away from as fast as something larger got into a range we could afford.
The fact that you can, technically, do something that can be described by the same term as you would describe a task on a desktop is a bizarre reason to choose such a device. Can I use the programs I use on a desktop? No. Can I find programs that are at least in the same category? Sometimes. Is the screen incredibly small? Yes. Do I prefer to use a tiny screen? No.
So why would I use it? Because, if I shelled out that much cash, it better be for something more than a fancy looking coaster.
My usual boring signature: Nothing

Not quite, I don't buy them because they're made by Apple, I buy them because they appeal to me most. I like the hardware, the software, and I've already invested a fair amount into the iTunes ecosystem. I own some movies, books, and a lot of apps. It makes sense to continue using Apple products, as long as they continue to do what I want them to do.
