Interesting thread that is. Last post was in 2008 though..

I'm just wondering has the whole fusion faded before it began?

Don't waste your time waiting for something that will never come. Just switch to Delphi. You will never repent.
Since I discovered Delphi and Lazarus, VB has become history to me.

I only switched to Delphi when Microsoft made up their mind to discontinue VB6.

Although I write my new apps in Delphi, I still have to maintain my old code in VB6.

You could start doing some practice downloading the free Turbo Explorer edition.

It's fully functional and allows you to (legally) develop commercial applications. The only limitation is, you can't make use of external libraries. Anyway, this is not a big problem as the Delphi toolbox is much richer than the VB6 one.

Speaking of VB alternatives.... Isnt RealBasic pretty much like VB, but a lil enhanced?

I am quite thinking of giving this a go. Should be easy to convert.

What kept me from switching to RealBasic was the fact that Real Software is a small company -- so there is no guarantee that their product will have a long life -- and that there is very little documentation about it on the Web. Delphi, on the contrary, has a long history and you can find good technical support on Embarcadero's Web site.

You'll come running back to VB6 before the RealBASIC trial even expires.

I agree with you. This will not happen if you try Delphi, though.

The only drawback for me on RealBasic is the fact that it hasn't got full intellisense. Kind of an auto-complete, but not enough.

Actually the only reason, I don't switch to other languages and stick with good old VB is the fact that it has the intellisense. Keeps you away from having to remember all the properties of an object etc... Although I know them off heart now , but was very useful when I first started and still is.

thanks for all the feedback it will be another year before i switch. When the times comes I will surely do some through investigating. At this point the only thing i am sure of is it will not be vb.net unless the PC genie put the net framework on every existing pc in the USA. Maybe a rumor that google is going to make vb7 would spur microsoft.

LOL isnoend07! I would absolutely love to hear Google was making a VB7. What a healthy serving that would be for Microsoft. I like the way you think.

RealBasic seems pretty good already, especially since it can compile cross-platform. Does anyone know if the applications you create (by default) require any additional runtime files? I downloaded the trial, but it wouldn't even build the project it starts out with by default...

    Re: proposal for vb6 replacement

When you compile you'll automatically get some additional DLL files.

I think the biggest failure with REALbasic is that it fails being more than the sum of it's parts. The parts that are good in it are easily overthrown by the parts that are weak. Generally I don't get the same "I love to code with this!" feeling with REALbasic. Also, the compiled applications always seem sluggish, the same way the IDE itself is slow. Kind of the same feeling you get when playing cross platform console game releases.

So summa summarum... By features REALbasic is great, but it lacks the good feeling. In what it does it is one of a kind and it gets the job done, but it isn't as pleasant as with some other tools that are available.
