Jesus Christ I'm 30 today.
If there's anything interesting to be taken from all this it's an example of failed dreams! I used to really want to get into coding but I was just too much for instant gratification as a kid. I ended up doing motion design/3D & vfx.

And what is wrong with 3D design?
It's more fun than conventional coding IMHO.

This thread is a blast from the past. Happy 30th duc ! Apart from some dead dreams I hope you lot are all well! I'll be 42 at the weekend and have recently returned to coding after an 8 year gap!
Let's resurrect this thread again in another 10 years and check-in and to see how we are all going!

With luck I'll be in a new industry... hopefully one that involves serving up tacos from a mobile establishment.

You'll have to be careful as to what you serve: You don't want to end up a has-bean.
Nice thread, though. Hiya Duc and PeteD.

Assuming this is a reply to my post:

It was a reply to you, but I wasn't sure what the 14 referred to, so I wasn't quite sure that I was talking about whatever you were talking about.

Okay. Thinking you know better than others, is dangerous. Having a personal opinion and expressing it in the proper way less so. Even better is to ask about what you do not know or are uncertain about and to keep checking. Too much checking can however mean you will fail to act.
These are my thoughts.
What are you thoughts?

Well, that particular duck is more rubber than funny.
I happen to have two of those on the edge of my tub. I picked them up at developer conferences. I'll be going to another one this year, perhaps I'll add a third duck? I hope they don't bill me for it.

Haha, there’s a model “duck” among my trinkets. That’s what they call a Citroen 2cv (car) here.

I need to find a green or blue duck to go with the yellow and orange ducks I already have.

Nope, it's the variety, not the color. I just need more ducks.

And how would you like to add variety? Size, color, shape, species?

I'll leave that up to the vendors....though if I had to choose, species would be my choice. Some species-specific rubber duckies would be pretty awesome. They probably exist, too, but I'm not about to go looking.

Re: This was the first message board I ever joined. I was 15.
Meanwhile I am still here doing coding. My friend recently asked me an interesting question and I guess I'll put it here in the chitchat section. He asked me if getting good grades in maths and physics helps with coding. But I honestly think that being good in maths and physics doesn't help me in coding at all. It is all about common logics and practice. I am wondering if anyone have other thoughts? My friend also asked me what he could do to get good in those courses as he's in highschool and he really wants to be a programmer one day. I just told him to try out some tutors or online resources. I hope I gave him some useful advice. Any thoughts?

Re: This was the first message board I ever joined. I was 15.
I'd say how much math is necessary depends on what kind of programming he wants to do. In most of the development I've done, physics hasn't played a role, but math has. I've done a lot of financial and business-related type of development. I'm hoping that changes soon. I'm at a new employer whose clientele has much more diverse needs than simple GL/Financial type of development. In fact, at the moment, I'm reading up on working with neural networks and other computer learning techniques. In my opinion, it's more than just logic and common sense... it's also about patterns and processes.

I would say that is where the physics would come into play.
imo, math is music is programming - and it all comes from the same place in my brain.
Engineering might be a way to describe it in a single word.
