Resolved [RESOLVED] Pier to Pier Network - System.DirectoryServices

We are setting up authentication for our users in our software and were looking at the System.DirectoryServices that other posts have suggested.

Some of our clients use pier to piers (workgroup) networks since they are only 2-3 computers. Will this still work without a true server or domain? One of the workstations will be the file server but only using something like WXP.

    Will this still work?

    Thanks,
    Eroc

System.DirectoryServices is for ActiveDirectory so requires you to have ActiveDirectory running on a Domain Controller. It won't help in a workgroup setup because there are no user identities set up for the entire network.

By the way, a "pier to pier network" would be a boat. The alternative to a client/server arrangement is "peer to peer".

Question Re: Pier to Pier Network - System.DirectoryServices

    Thanks for the reply.

Yeah I know, it's peer to peer. I got in a hurry and didn't proof read.

Anyhow, thank you for a quick reply.

I read your answer but I'm going to read into this to make sure I do not go reinventing the wheel.

Without a domain controller, does this rule out using the active directory to authenticate users?

Are there any other options for a peer to peer network then?

    Thanks again,
    Eroc

Without a domain controller there is no ActiveDirectory so that pretty much rules it out. You either keep a list of users on a server somewhere or you don't authenticate.

Thank you very much. That has clarified it for me.

By the way, since you corrected the spelling error, I might as well point out that a pier-to-pier network is also called a ship.
    My usual boring signature: Nothing
