Unhappy How do they know what programs are running in my computer?

Recently the network admin people in my office has asked me to remove some "unauthorised" applications from my computer!

Well, they were all freewares (eg. multitab browser, multi-clipboard copy etc.) and some of them where my own developed applications (EXE files). But still company insists that I remove them as per corporate policy I'm not supposed to "install" any applications which are not provided by corporate admin.

I just wonder how do they know what applications I'm running.

For my own developed applications, there were no installation log (i.e. not available from Windows Add/Remove panels), I simply copied some EXE files from my home computer to office computer.

I think the only place they can get the info if they continuously scan what processes are running into my computer's memory.

What process they do run usually to check this??

I would say they rely on a bunch of APIs to do this.

Re: How do they know what programs are running in my computer?

The last company I worked for used a software called TrackIT!, I think, that had the abliity to get an inventory of all software and hardware on any machine on thier network. Although I dont' think it would pick up custom exes you just copied over.

I've been in environments like this. Typically, they will have a list of standard programs. The scan looks for an .Exe and then when it finds one, it checks it against its standards list. If .Exe name isn't found, it is logged.

They actually don't know what these programs are they just know that they are not on the standards list.

Re: How do they know what programs are running in my computer?

Well, they didn't track all of my self made EXEs but only a few.
That means they didn't actually scan my hard drive - rather they probably took a snapshot of all processes running in my computer's RAM at a point and then checked them against standard database.

Re: How do they know what programs are running in my computer?

If they are scanning you PC you could store all you custom apps on a network share that only you have access to or (if you have local admin rights) create a local folder that only you have right to.

Re: How do they know what programs are running in my computer?

    This involves a few steps:

    1. Find CAT5 cable located near the rear of your Computer.
    2. Either Cut, or Remove wire from computer.
    3. Continute your life...

Re: How do they know what programs are running in my computer?

You're on their network, they can do whatever they like and that includes scanning your computer for applications that shouldn't be there .. do what DClamp said, but be prepared to look for another job

Cutting is more fun, cuz it forces them to splice the cable again... which could just make them angry.

More frequently though, they just tend to put a new cable in there and throw the old one away. 5 metres of CAT5 costs less than the man-hours to splice the old one.

My company is using TrackIT also, but I don't think the program does inventory of all software on the computer.
I use TrackIT to track how much time I spend on a particular project, everyone in the whole company is using this program.

They scan comptuers for strange software because they are concerned about data security. And if I had a company I would do the same of course. I mean you could copy a database (or use a program to transfer data) outside of the company. Imagine if you leak out a database with customers address and/or phone numbers ? The things anyone can do with such information ?

TrackIT has a lot of Administrative features that you may not be aware of if you are only using it for project management. It's primarly marketed as a help desk tool and to support those features it has built into it the ablity to log all software and hardware specs of a specific machine. Check out http://www.numarasoftware.com/Track-It.asp for more detailed info (if you're really interested)

Re: How do they know what programs are running in my computer?

My company uses programs like TrackIt. It is preloaded on every workstation as part of the standard OS/SOE. It monitors the launch of any exe and checks against an inventory - as Hack has suggested. It doesn't scan your HD - it just waits for you to run something then logs the exe name. It's useful for checking installed software against licences a company owns.

If you rename your exe's to something that looks like a system program you can sometimes slip by. You can call your flash new text editor "msservice.exe" and it will log as this. The more astute administrators will see that out of all the workstations, yours is the only one that runs this but eh - it's worth a shot.

They could also just remotely view the process list on your machine from a remote workstation

You used "remote" twice... redundancy is a superfluous thing...
