It's because it views the word OF as an object rather than a collection of letters (probably because of its length).

None of us are uber geeks. An uber geek would have written a program to count the number of times the "F" key was struck then would have typed that message out. On the end of the writting the message his results would have been posted here and on a random post on slashdot..... An alpha geek would have already written a program to do that when he was 12years old on an altair....

    Re: Eye Test

It seems to me that people who don't have english as their native language would count all 6 easier than those who do.

For example, My Father, Austrian in origin, pronounced the f in of as a soft f, as opposed to how I pronounce it, which is a harsh v. Mentally, if you are reading the text, you are "sounding" out the text in your head. You tend to only identify the f when it sounds like an f. My father would have probably counted all 6.

Perhaps a test could be made that, based upon your reported counts of certain letters in samples of text, that the scores would indicate what your native language is.

    Re: Eye Test

Proofreading is notoriously difficult: when you look at words, you are processing words, not the letters that compose them. If there is an extra, incorrect letter in a word, it will have been processed by your low-level vision modules, but it will not have been "seen". Thus, for example, you will probably not have noticed that the "a"s in the last sentences were of a different shape than elsewhere[33]. Nonetheless on several occasions you were undoubtedly looking directly at them. It may take you a while to realize that the sign below (Fig. 4) does not say: The illusion of "seeing".[34] You may be furious to find confirmation of years of the scientific study of reading showing that in this sentence there are in fact more "f"s than you think (count them!).[35]

Those people must be in an altaired state

I got 6 on the first try....but then again, I knew what the catch was, so I was watching out for all the of's.
