    Reputation power methodology

I asked a question earlier about rep power (which turned out to be about rep points) here http://www.vbforums.com/showthread.p...putation+power

As was established, your post count and years on VB forums go toward your rep power.
Shouldn't your reputation count too? For example for every 200 reputation you get +1 rep power. Reputation points should have a priority over post count and years as a member because they tell more about a persons credibility.

    Just a thought.

If you come up with a forumula, send it to vbulletin to include in the next update. I don't know what it would be, but I'm open to suggestions.

For every 1,000 rep points you earn you gain 1 additional point of power. It's in the FAQ

    Re: Reputation power methodology

it is every 100 points you get you get i rep bar... it is miss worded in the FAQ, i was going to make a new topic about this, but i'll just state it here...

a perfect example is penagate... (for example usage) he did not get his rep bar from the years at being at VBF, because he has only been here for 6 months, so he either got it from number of posts, or rep points... since he does not have 4,000 posts, he has to have gotten it from points, and he has 125+ points!

    see my point!

please either correct me, or update the FAQ(no pun intended),

    THANKS,

    Re: Reputation power methodology

I think you are right there All but rep power I believe is how many points you will add to somebody's rep when you rep him/her.

    Re: Reputation power methodology

    Correct Dee-U.

Rep Power is how many points someone else receives when you rep them.

    1 - Default
1 - For every complete year since you registered.
    1 - 4,000 posts
1 - for every 1,000 Rep points accumulated

My Rep power is 8. So when I rep someone they receive 8 points.

Rep squares or bars are how many rep points you have accumulated.

    0 - 99 - 1 Greenbar
    100 - 199 - 2 Greenbars
    200 - 299 - 3 Greenbars
    300 - 399 - 4 Greenbars
400 - ??? - 5 Greenbars ' Surprize so you have to wait and see.

    Rep bars:

    0 - 99 - 1 Greenbar
    100 - 199 - 2 Greenbars
    200 - 299 - 3 Greenbars
    300 - 399 - 4 Greenbars
    400 - 499 - 5 Greenbars
    500 - 699 - 5 Grrenbars + 1 light green bar
    700 - 899 - 5 Greenbars + 2 light green bars
    900 - 1099 - 5 Greenbars + 3 light green bars

I think once you have 10 bars it stops

You just had to go and ruin my surprize
I was getting them from codeguru too but I think its 749 not 699.
They seem to take a jump and not follow the 100 point spread after 400.

    400 - ??? - 5 greenbars.
    ??? - 749 - 5 greenbars + 1 light greenbar
    750 - ??? - 5 greenbars + 2 light greenbars.
    ??? - ??? or 1000 - 5 greenbars + 3 light greenbars.

That one guy has over 1,000+ reps

How come on Codeguru they have the option to see who repped you turned on, whereas here we don't? I've read all the discussions and know why we have it off, but I was wondering why it is different there.

I was curious about this too. But I dont know why it is off. Can you enlighten me?
I don't know the reasons, but I cant see what would be bad if it was on. Right now, people mostly put their name after they give a rep (positive). So we still see who it is from. If it was on, it would prevent people from giving you a bad rep because of some grudge or some other missungerstanding.

    Re: Reputation power methodology

It would also prevent members from giving -ve valid reps also because of the fear of retaliation too. Also, if the rep'e wants to
remain anoyminous then that wouldnt be possible either.

Anoyminous seems to be the safest and give the most options to us.

    Re: Reputation power methodology

I always sign my name if I give a rep, whether it is positive or negative (only ever given two negatives anyway). Also, if it is negative I think the rep giver should explain why. Uncommented positive reps are fine because we know that is just a way of saying "thanks for helping" or "nice code" or whatever. But if you receive an negative rep with no explanation it is a bit harsh.

Also, giving negative reps in retaliation is against the rules.

Info from vBulletins site shows that the "squares" or "boxes" are actually called "Gems".
Also, you can have up to 11 displayed without any hacks required.

Seems we have a long way to go to see that!

Thanks to cilu (from CodeGuru) for finding the info.

If another member reads one of your posts that they find really useful or helpful or just exceptional code, they can give you a Rep by clicking the "Rate this post" link. Then depending on the members Rep level power you can receive from 0 to 14 Reps (also can get negative Reps if you post bad code or behave in an unprofessional way). See the link in my signature for more information of "Reputations and Rating Posts"

The logic for the squares displaying is buried in the code. It is not a setting I can control, so I'm not sure of the specific times it happens. I know a few people have worked on figuring it out. You might find the answer on vBulletin's site.

There is now a witch hunt for VBForum people by Codeguru members.....

Actually, I've gone back on my decision, which I may regret later....
I've turned on the display here. If I find someone does a negative rating as a retaliation for getting a negative rating, then we will simply ban the person doing the retalitory rating.

So, if you give me a positive rating now, I will know it was you

Normal gem for every 100 points up to 500. Bright gem for every 200 after that, but limited to 10 gems in total.

The limit is 11 gems, 5 green and 6 bright green. althopugh I have seen vBull sites with up to 15 or so Gems. May be a Hack to get the increased display or just a newer version.

    No, it's 10. I looked in the c0d.

edit - yes, a hack. 10 is the limit in 3.5.4.

Was it a zero based array or something?

    Re: Reputation power methodology

Seems like the weighting is a bit off. At this rate, I won't reach 1,000 reps in my lifetime, but I keep increasing in power by 1 each year? That doesn't seem quite right. Why should my rep gain power just because I'm older? I can understand why it would gain as I got higher rep or post counts, but not due simply to age.

Oh young Grasshopper, because throughout life one becomes more wise (hopefully) with time and has learned immensly. Thusly, one would want the expertise from someone who has been on the Forums for a long time.
