    Re: Post Race!

One thing I find interesting is that I feel like the Post Race has been pretty active for a few years. However, I see us on page 1607, and the breadcrumbs allow us to look at various earlier pages....

Also, posts in Chit-Chat don't count in your post total. So, those 2,491 are all dross...in case anybody was unclear on that fact.
  3. Re: For those interested in keeping VB.Net a first class .Net language.

That's cause you aren't symbol minded;)

I don't remember whether or not they gave an example. I have long felt that it's more of a mindset issue. VB isn't much like any spoken language, whether...

Re: Adding a Variable by Clicking Button

A List is a wrapper on an array. If you haven't worked with arrays, they are pretty conceptually simple: It's a collection with a fixed size, kind of like an egg carton. That's a bit of a nuisance,...

Re: Adding a Variable by Clicking Button

It doesn't really work that way. What you want is a List(of T), where every time they click the button, you add something to the list. What you add in there isn't quite clear, but it sounds like you...
  13. Re: ~~~ Warning messages when logged in (intermediate page) ~~~

The issue is that a password stolen from this site is what will first be used against other sites where there might be something of value. Of course, that doesn't change your fundamental point: Shame...

  19. Re: For those interested in keeping VB.Net a first class .Net language.

I'm not even sure that's quite true. Me memory was that MS said, back around 2013 or 2015, that VB would move more slowly, not that it would stop moving entirely. The reasoning was more around the...

VS 2017 Re: Loading of controls

Another point is that the only real issue sounds like it is the fact that the current loading is 'messy'. If that's the case, there are a couple options you can use. For one, if this is not the first...

VS 2010 Re: Shortening Hex values

I don't see why that would be an issue, either. An image is nothing more than a byte array, and those get FAR larger than 700K.

How did you end up with all those bytes as a string? That's a...
  22. Re: For those interested in keeping VB.Net a first class .Net language.

There are plenty of languages brought under the umbrella of VS. It's a good IDE. Why would MS not want to cast the widest net to get more and more developers working in their ecosystem?
  23. Re: For those interested in keeping VB.Net a first class .Net language.

This whole "slower to jump" thing is what MS stated a couple years back. I'm not going to look for the quote, but somebody linked to it on here. The idea was that C# would get the shiny new features,...
  24. Re: For those interested in keeping VB.Net a first class .Net language.

Oops, no units. I should have mentioned that the measure is in millimeters. It's still too long, as it's not 30 mm worth, either, but that's certainly better than 30 inches.
  25. Re: For those interested in keeping VB.Net a first class .Net language.

That's NOT all they had to do. If they had sizable programs written in VB6, as many do, they also had to rewrite the program in the different language since there was no working migration tool....
  26. Re: For those interested in keeping VB.Net a first class .Net language.

I would make a couple of points:

    1) Form letter responses are easily recognized as such by the recipient, and I can't imagine that they are considered very highly. It's quite likely that they...

    Re: Investigating Drag and Drop

Yeah, but I kind of already have that. The control must have something in the .Tag, and that something must implement a certain interface. Sure, checking a constant would be a bit faster than...

True. There are exactly two different items that can reasonably be dropped, and anything else should be rejected. Technically, the solution I have does allow for any control to be dropped, not just...

OK, it was all related, and was solved, though the solution feels quite hackish, so I'm going to leave the question open for a bit, in case somebody feels like wading through all this to provide some...

    Re: Investigating Drag and Drop

OK, I see the error in part of my ways. In the old design, the Shape inherited a common base class, but it had the PB as a member. The PB handled the events, but ALL of the Shapes just had a PB as a...

    Re: Investigating Drag and Drop

Ugh! I figured out one piece. The format available in the DragEnter is the Shape itself. That's really unfortunate, because those are just plugins.

I'm not sure why this is different. In the old...

    Re: Calculator error

Not really, you're actually looking for a shortcut, and that's very much the right thing to do. In this case, I don't believe that one exists. You're looking for something that will parse the string...

    Investigating Drag and Drop

EDIT: This problem was resolved in post #4. However, the solution feels a bit hackish, so I'm leaving this open in case anybody else wants to wade through all my ramblings and make a suggestion.

Yeah, I was thinking of something else...something wrong, when I suggested the binary search. A direct array access would be the fastest, but there's a real question of how it was built. As long as...

That would only give you 16^6 possible ID, which is quite a few, but not as great as the original 36^9.
  40. Re: Corona virus, China major city lockdowns, etc.

I don't think we really have enough experience with this kind of thing to say for certain what is right or wrong until we can look back on it. What I see is that the Chinese government learned...
