    Re: DSN with SqlClient

I'm sure that would work, not that I've tried to do it, though.

    Re: Virtual Proxy Pattern

By using a proxy, you create a placeholder for an object. There can be different reasons for doing this. A virtual proxy is usually used as a stand in for an object that is "expensive" to create....
  3. Re: First simple program, friend can't run it???

kasracer just brought up a very good point - slow connection speed, simple app - why the heck to I need a 20 meg download for this?

They say that in the future, Windows operating systems will ship...
  4. Re: First simple program, friend can't run it???

Like I said, I understand this, but I haven't seen any hostility to this when it comes to my clients. I'm curious, is this your own personal bias or have you clients balked when you told them that...
  5. Re: First simple program, friend can't run it???

Yeah, I've heard that before. If it's an issue for you, then it's an issue. Like I said, there's no way to get around not having the framework.

Luckily for me, I tell my clients the prerequisites,...
  6. Re: Binary Data & .Net Sockets, URGENT [[WILL NEVER SOLVED]]

I guess I can prove that .NET sockets work fine. My applications work for me, one socket application I have has been platform tested and certified by VeriSign for Microsoft - there's no issues with...
  7. Re: First simple program, friend can't run it???

I don't know, I've never tried it. I guess it would be possible to not have to have certain .dll's that you app never used. Seems easier to just download the entire package and roll with it.

  8. Re: First simple program, friend can't run it???

Like everyone says, you need the framework to run an application that runs against the framework. You can't get around it, and should probably package an installer that makes it easy for the end...

    Re: ok this is insane...

But I guess you still don't see any changes in your database? Did you look to see whether there's a profiler available in Sql Express?

    Re: ok this is insane...

Yeah, I have IIS installed, not sure if that would make a difference. I've got VS2005 pro and I was running against Sql Server 2000 developer edition.

To try to see what's happening, I'd check for...

    Re: Configuring WebServices at Client

You'll probably need to set the .Url property. I usually set this via the .config file.

    Re: ok this is insane...

Nevermind on the instructions, I see all that business now. Like I said, I've never used it.

Interesting thing is, it works fine for me. I set up a new DataSource, dragged a table over, saw that...

    Re: ok this is insane...

This is pretty interesting. I've always either done all the work manually or used business objects, so I'm curious.

I'm trying to duplicate what you've done, but I don't get how you "drag and drop...

    Re: DSN with SqlClient

Now I'm getting confused - it happens quite easy.
I though you said, well, exactly that. Now you're saying you CAN bypass the ODBC layer?

    Re: DSN with SqlClient

Too bad you have to use the DSN, but requirements are requirements. If you're targeting Sql Server, you want to use SqlClient, because the performance is better. You probably know this, but it's...

Re: Where used in Visual Studio

If you right-click, you can choose Go To Reference, but it only seems to find A reference, not all.

In 2005 there's a new menu option "Find all References", but I guess you're using 2003? If so,...
  18. Re: Compiler errors moving from VS2003 to VS2005

For anyone who uses VS2005, here's the info I get when converting. I'm not sure yet if anything applies. Thanks.
  19. Re: Compiler errors moving from VS2003 to VS2005

Ok, thanks for the reply. I haven't coded anything myself at all, this is purely an "upgrade" issue. I can understand the warnings (which I haven't posted because they're deprecated things), but I...
  20. Re: Compiler errors moving from VS2003 to VS2005

I downloaded some code that accesses the Windows Address Book from here - http://www.sichbo.ca/DotNetCode/1204

You open it up is VS2003, compile and everything is fine. Open with VS2005, convert,...
  21. Re: Compiler errors moving from VS2003 to VS2005

Not that I can see - I just searched again.

BTW, this application compiles just fine using VS2003. If that makes a difference.

    Thanks,
    Mike
  22. Compiler errors moving from VS2003 to VS2005

I'm not familiar with C++ at all, but I'm attempting to convert a managed application created on .NET 1.1 to .NET 2.0.

Just opening in VS2005 and letting it convert gave 6 errors and 6 warnings -...

    Re: VB.Net 2005 and SQL

Are you using Sql Server 2000 or 2005? Either way, by default, the .mdf file should be somewhere under the c:\programs files\microsoft sql server (default install), in a "Data" directory.

    Re: Strange error when publishing...

Re: What is the Decorator Pattern?

I didn't Google, so I'm not sure what you'd find, but it's easy to get lost and/or get a technical explanation without really understanding what the heck a pattern can be used for in the real world....
  31. Re: VSTO 2005 - Non-trivial Outlook Add-ins

It already contains it. You'll see the Outlook Add-In template type when you create a new project, under the Office node.

I *think* that Beta was for VS before it was officially released.

    When...
  32. Re: How do I refer to the system32 folder from a batch file?

%systemroot% will give you (on XP) c:\windows - I guess you'd have to append system32.

If you type SET on the command line you can see all the environment variables (there's also a gui somewhere)....
  33. Re: VSTO 2005 - Non-trivial Outlook Add-ins

You'll have fun when you get VSTO. I've been digging how you can make your own task pane in Excel (or Word) - you just make your own UserControls and add them to it. Plus you can hook into Excel...
  34. VSTO 2005 - Non-trivial Outlook Add-ins

  36. Re: Strange IDE behavior of c# compared to IDE of VB.NET...

It has nothing to do with C#, it's the IDE. You can use Notepad instead, if you'd like :)

    Little things like that don't bother me. I didn't know there was a VS2004. I'm using VS2005 and there's...
  37. Re: Strange IDE behavior of c# compared to IDE of VB.NET...

I guess the IDE likes "Woof" as much as you do :)

Seems like there are a few "hangover" type things like this that building the project (Shift-Ctrl-B) clears up.

  38. Re: Need help with craeting a class with a single function in it.

That's the default no arguments constructor. I know more about C# than VB.NET, but I believe VB hides this from you. You know what would be really insteresting (assuming you have both simple classes...

Re: I Got a few errors

  40. Re: Addhandler: multiple routines from one events
