Yeah, i'd go the Schema-Route too, since ColumnNames are just entries like in a regular table.

    What DBMS?
And i agree with FD: I might have read your requirement the wrong way

Re: SQL - Need help with a query

    The Query looks good.
You'd have to test it against a Request which has gone "ping-pong" a lot
The only thing i'd do is to Filter the second (nested inside the Join) query for "Approval", since...
  5. Re: (String search algorithm) Skip the contents of the quotes to find a substring

    Don't!
Rather use vbNullString or the classic ""
  6. Re: (String search algorithm) Skip the contents of the quotes to find a substring

    Huh?
    Why not just:
    1) Search your String 1 for the (opening) quote. Result be saved in S (=Start)
    2) Search your String 1 for the (closing) quote starting at S+1, being saved in E (=End)
    3)...

    A combination of 1 and 2 of FD's approaches.
It's basically his 3rd approach but turned around:

LineItems(3) is a String ("RX7"), so your If fails and forks to the Else where you raise your Error.
    And LineItems(6) is not a Date ("925.6")
