    Re: Zero-length or Nothing

I also see that it is insensitive to culture. They really should be more sensitive, don't you think? Heck, it's running on a PC, right?

I suppose this might just be another nod to VB6 backwards...
  2. Re: Boot Race. Like post race but completely different.

Hmmm, I'd have to try that on my Surface Pro. The times look about the same, though.

    Re: Haskell

I always thought that was one of the Great Old Ones, similar to Cthulhu. I've never tried the language because I was always afraid that I'd draw the elder sign incorrectly.
  4. Re: Serial connection does not work outside of Visual Studio Environment...

Better to post the relevant code wrapped in code tags rather than the whole mass, but it looks like a few people have taken a look, so it might work out.
  5. Re: What Software dev projects to build more skills?

The differences between VB and C# are not great. The biggest difference is in the syntax, but as far as features are concerned, MS tried to converge the two languages beginning with the 2005 version...
  6. Re: Whats your favorite program you have made?

I knew this thread would end up here.
  7. Re: Serial connection does not work outside of Visual Studio Environment...

I'm much less certain that this has anything to do with the serial port, especially not with the port object. If it was "getting stuck" the internet would be filled with stuff about that, but it...

    Re: Zero-length or Nothing

It's probably just that the = operator is overloaded for the String class in an odd way such that Nothing is evaluated as String.Empty. That would be a shared method, so the compiler wouldn't...

    Re: Zero-length or Nothing

By the way, I tried out the test I suggested in post #4, and got what I expected, though I don't think it is the way it should be. In that test, I have a function that returns Nothing. Therefore, st1...

    Re: Michael Brown ?

Isn't there somewhere out there using the White Castle Defense? You hear a burglar and hit him with a barage of mini, fat-laden, burgers.

    Re: Michael Brown ?

I think the police should be given bear spray.

Enforcement pepper spray is 5% capcasin, and has a pretty short range. Bear spray, on the other hand, is 20% capsasin and can shoot a cloud 20 feet....

VS 2008 Re: Instantiation of Array of Classes

    VB6 had a hashtable, but I don't remember a collection....though it has been over a decade, so who knows?...not me, I guess.
  13. Re: Whats your favorite program you have made?

I guess that my favorite was a program I wrote to evolve equations to match patterns in data. It was effectively a polynomial, multi-variate, regression analysis engine with a Hollywood-style...
  14. VS 2010 Re: More help needed to add options to RANDOM NUMBER GENERATOR app

Where did you put that line? With Dim, it would suggest that it was a local variable (inside a method). You want it to be a form level variable. It probably won't matter in this case, since people...
  15. VS 2012 Re: Dynamic Creation of Multiple Events for Dynamically Created Control

For that matter, the event handlers are only wired up for ThemeModeChosen = 2, as the ThemeModeChosen = 1 is empty.

    Re: Post Race!

Good thing that part of you is growing up.

I was thinking just the other day, as I was hiking 26 miles, that I don't really feel a few years short of 50. I feel like I'm about 30, it's just that...

    Re: Sticky Thread Needed

Frankly, I think that stickies are mostly useless. The problem I see is that they get ignored. Of course, this observation has a significant sampling bias, as we can never be quite sure how many...
  18. VS 2012 Re: Dynamic Creation of Multiple Events for Dynamically Created Control

So, it IS in the Load event. Is that Catch block truly empty? That could be your problem. As you may or may not know, on an increasing number of OS (64-bit, only, I believe), an exception thrown in...

    Re: Zero-length or Nothing

To me, a return of Nothing is only used in the case where "no possible answer of any sort would be correct." I generally don't use that for strings, but do use it for methods that return objects when...
  20. Re: What India Can Teach Silicon Valley About Its Gender Problem

    It's the fundamentalists!!

Actually, that's only somewhat in jest. I've long thought that if coding genetic algorithms were taught early in school, where they would be absorbed pretty readily,...

    Re: Post Race!

I'm going to lose both of my big toenails. I don't even know why this time, and it's getting pointless to try to figure it out. Typically, steep descents are toenail removers, and I never had that...
  22. VS 2012 Re: Dynamic Creation of Multiple Events for Dynamically Created Control

Ok, an auto-formatting textbox. But what happens on a copy/paste? You get the Textchanged event, but not the KeyPress Event...I think.

Still, that's beside the point. You may want to post the code...

VS 2008 Re: Instantiation of Array of Classes

What listing thing are you refering to? The code formatting? That's just the VB or # button (the VB button looks like VE to most people because the closing parts of the B got cut off on the button)....

VS 2010 Re: [RESOLVED] problem with Select Case

Trim may be sufficient alone, if all there is is a space. If you have tabs in there as well (or might have tabs), then the Replace would be necessary.

Re: Fill in Binary Array with an Array

I'm not quite sure that I read the question the way that Niya is. Are you looking for something like the bytes displayed as either decimal or hex separated by periods, or are you really looking for...

    Re: Zero-length or Nothing

I don't fail to see why people get confused over THAT part. What gets me is that you may be getting a zero length string in BOTH cases. It isn't just the Text property that behaves in that odd...
  27. VS 2012 Re: Dynamic Creation of Multiple Events for Dynamically Created Control

One thing I'd point out is that the code may not work even if the events were working right. It'll work fine if the user is typing into the textbox, but copy/paste may not trigger the events anyways....

Re: Cool Stuff in Visual Studio

I've never used Debug.Diassembly, but if it really is IL (rather than actual ASM), then there are some fairly esoteric uses for it. I've looked at it to compare two chunks of code to see why one was...

  31. Re: Value of MTA Certification (Microsoft Technical Associate)

I would say that the MCSE is much more widely known, so I would expect that it is more valuable.

The MTA can also be a trap, though you are FAR too young to know about that.... heck, I'm too young...
  32. Re: [VB2010] Show/Close a Form depending from a number

True. I was assuming that you were always just Showing (rather than ShowDialog, which would be quite a bit different), and that you would therefore only ever need a single instance of the form which...

VS 2008 Re: Instantiation of Array of Classes

Modules were quite the thing in VB6. In .NET, they are still there, and still work about the same way, but they really aren't the same thing. A module in .NET is quietly turned into a class with all...

VS 2010 Re: problem with Select Case

The easiest answer is that no case matches in your select. You probably only need the first sentence of what JMC suggested to identify the problem. Put a breakpoint on the Select statement, step...

VS 2013 Re: Why is this leakey??

I seem to remember that the WebBrowser itself was leaky and that this was a known bug. You might search around on that point, as others would surely have more information.
  36. Re: [VB2010] Show/Close a Form depending from a number

While what KI showed is informative, I would like to second the suggestion that .Paul. made. You can work with the fact that the number is in the name of the form, but that seems likely to cause you...
  37. Re: beginner question: help with making a same event for a list of pictureboxes

  38. Re: settings and more in deploying an application

Re: Depression, how do you deal with it?

On a whim, I covered 26 miles with a pack yesterday. By the end of that, I met most of the symptoms of depression:

    1) Difficulty concentrating or remember details: Check. I could barely remember...
