    you can either use excel, if it is installed, i am not sure why else it might not be working
    or you can use an ADO connection, with or without excel being intalled, but unlikely to need both

    i am not sure why you want to open the file both in excel and as a ADO connection, you do not need the workbook to be open for an ADO connection to work
    or why you duplicate the procedure in case...

    try this method instead, connect directly to the workbook, instead of excel application
