    Re: Post Race!

I hate having flies in my face, and I'm sure common sense does too. However, I know this because flies like eyes. Common sense doesn't have any "I"s, but I'm sure that flies are still attracted to...

Re: VB and real world applications.

I built my career based on fish. It's a very slippery base to work from, too. However, it's also a good example. There are lots of non-programming fields that generate large amounts of data and are...
  6. VS 2010 Re: Return Specific Item in Array

    MsgBox(strArr(77))

That would do if the item you want is always the 77th item (though I wouldn't be using the legacy MsgBox, myself). What you can not do is just read the 77th item from the file....
  7. Re: VB 2008 Question about reading and writing files

Yeah, that opens up a whole different line of thinking: A text file may not be the best or easiest way to deal with this data. So, are you tied to it, or do you have flexibility on that point?
  8. VS 2013 Re: Number of elements to array

Everything has a type, in this case you just don't know what the type is. What TnTinMN suggested will get you the type. You need to cast it to that type and use it as such, then you will get the...
  9. VS 2013 Re: In dire need of help! Trying to pass this college unit! Overloads!?

When you get that messagebox, press NO. That should allow you to see the errors. Normally, the window that shows the errors would come up automatically, but you may have managed to shut it off or...
  10. Re: VB 2008 Question about reading and writing files

That will overwrite, certainly, but it will overwrite the entire file, which doesn't seem like what the OP wanted.

I agree with Gruff that the best solution is to read the entire file into memory...
  11. Re: How to get parallel execution / constructor

Don't decorate the Sub New, that won't gain you anything. You are close as far as what you are doing inside the constructor, but I would say you should go further. The constructor itself isn't async,...

    Re: Post Race!

I have seen it happen, to a small extent. This was a bigger issue a few decades back, which is before I entered the labor force. It was certainly an issue for an earlier generation.
  14. VS 2010 Re: Newb Question: Equation not coming up with right total

No, not really. The gender gap is a real thing with multiple causes. It is going away, bit by bit, but it still exists. It also starts very early on and persists. As women increasingly outnumber men...

VS 2010 Re: Graphics Help - Flickering Graphics

You'd want to choose Me.Invalidate for that over Me.Refresh. Refresh is an imperative. While that is useful in some situations, this doesn't seem like one. Invalidate gives the UI more freedom to...

VS 2013 Re: Public IP sender/listener

Ah. I see. Well, I'm not going to touch that one. The whole issue that I see has to do with connection security, which is something I have been able to largely ignore in the programs I write. Though,...
  18. VS 2010 Re: Newb Question: Equation not coming up with right total

As an explanation. All that a textbox can contain is a string. It may be the string representation of a number, but it is still a string. What Val() does is converts the argument it receives (usually...

VS 2013 Re: Public IP sender/listener

Isn't that a bit backwards? If home2 is able to connect to home1, then home2 already has the IP address for home1, so what is to broadcast? You certainly don't want to be publicly, and repeatedly,...

  22. Re: How do you get your developed programs, "out into the world"?

    VS 2013 Re: Unloading Forms

What you described shouldn't normally be happening. There isn't any such thing as residual data. Each instance of a form is unique. The controls in it are unique, the form itself is unique, and so...

    VS 2013 Re: Code Optimizations

Well, that will solve it, as long as the bounds are set right. The problem was that the loop you had was waiting for a 0 to come up, which was outside the range of values being produced, so it would...

    VS 2013 Re: Code Optimizations

I always found the Rnd() method needlessly confusing, so I had to go to MSDN to check it out. You are right. With the function written the way it is, the value will never be 0, and therefore the loop...

VS 2010 Re: Graphics Help - Flickering Graphics

    VS 2013 Re: Code Optimizations

    What this:

does is takes the literal integer 1, converts it to an integer (which it already is, so I'm not sure whether any code is generated for that), then converts it to a...

    VS 2013 Re: Code Optimizations

    1) Get rid of the Randomize and Rnd. Those are legacy methods from VB6. Create one Random object at form scope and just use that throughout. The .Next method is easier to use than Rnd, anyways. Also,...

and it MUST exist in your dataset, or else you'd get a Null Reference Exception, not an Invalid Conversion Exception. However, the "PCR"...
  37. VS 2013 Re: Splitting data into a multideminsonal array

  39. Re: Error: Conversion from string "" to type 'Decimal' is not valid.

Well, the cell is clearly empty, so what would you like to have happen? You could use Decimal.TryParse to avoid the exception, but that is just going to return False in this case, because the cell is...
