    Odd that Polar in Worchester still bottles it - and I've never seen it locally here (an hour or so away from Worchester). Seems they have lots of flavors - were they all tough to swallow?

    It's not like I want to avoid CTE's here - it's just that the trick I went with in post #20 is just so simple to look at and I can see how it will run instantly since the ORDER by of the row number...

    It's returning ROW_NUMBER - a function that goes from 1 and up. No gaps in that.

    It's doing a TOP (X) from that 1, 2, 3, 4, 5... resultset - with the X being my max CopyCount.

    Green points - nope - who cares. I just could not wrap my mind around the TOP (variable) nature of your query.

    I had a feeling something with the ROW_NUMBER or some ranking function could do it...
