    Re: Post Race!

I'm off at a developers conference where I'm sitting in the last day of talks and running a pretty high fever. Basically, I'm not really here, no matter what here you think I am referring to.

VS 2010 Re: Help with Procedures and Properties?

I didn't suggest the structures idea because the class Stoic is in is clearly introductory. I seriously doubt that the class has gotten anywhere close to structures.

    Technically, any solution...

VS 2012 Re: [RESOLVED] Do thread priorities work?

That might work, but I'm not sure quite how it would work. I think you'd have to fire off about four threads at each priority level such that the high priority level was running on ALL the cores,...

VS 2012 Re: Do thread priorities work?

Ok, so it's multi-core. Why are you surprised at the results? Isn't that what you would expect? The different threads can run in parallel because they run on different cores. You have to find a...

VS 2012 Re: Do thread priorities work?

How are you determining that they get equal time? Are the results interleaved? Are you running on a single core system (if you aren't, then priority probably doesn't matter anyways in that code)?

VS 2010 Re: Help with Procedures and Properties?

I would disagree with 2:b. You are returning information, though you are returning two items. What you have chosen as an answer will certainly work, but it would be more common to use a function with...

VS 2010 Re: How do I

There are a couple things you could do, and what works best really comes down to the user interface experience. One thing I have done is put a CLEAR button beside each search item. Another option...

VS 2012 Re: Do thread priorities work?

Don't mess with thread priorities, they probably do not work the way you expect. If you set a thread to a higher priority, it doesn't get more time on the CPU, it gets ALL the CPU. No lower priority...
  12. Re: Application not Closing on Close Window

So, you turned off the application framework, and are running into some issues. Since you are using forms, why turn off the application framework? What are you gaining other than making things a bit...

Re: Microsoft Takes .NET Open Source

Yeah. Businesses are rarely altruistic, and MS has never been accused of that.
  14. Re: Bank Charges program not calculating correctly

Aside from that, put a breakpoint on the first line and step through the code. That's something that often isn't taught in courses, though it should be one of the first things covered. If you haven't...

    VS 2013 Re: List box

Rather than a textbox, use a NumericUpdown control. That way, the user can't enter non-numbers, which will avoid some errors.
  17. Re: [RESOLVED] Can I filter a dictionary content based on type?

I guess there could be something slightly faster if you ONLY want to find the B items, as you could have a property in the base class called ImaBObject have it overridable and have it return a...
  18. Re: [RESOLVED] Can I filter a dictionary content based on type?

Well, I don't believe you can get away from the loop. You can hide it using a variety of techniques, but it will always be there. For example, you could maintain a List of B items, and could add to...
  19. Re: [RESOLVED] Can I filter a dictionary content based on type?

Now that I think about it, there may be an even cleaner way to handle this, depending on exactly what "'Do stuff here with MyObject, which is of class B" means. You may be able to make an Overridable...
  20. Re: [RESOLVED] Can I filter a dictionary content based on type?

There isn't going to be a particularly clean way to do this. However, it happens to fall into the realm of a long running debate from the 90s. The issue was whether or not RTTI (Run Time Type...

  23. VS 2010 Re: Need help with calculating MAC address sequences.... I appreciate the help!

Yeah, but you can also see that it generally isn't worth worrying about. You have to get into the millions of concatenations in a single process before it really adds up. Of course, if the...

VS 2013 Re: [RESOLVED] Secure SQL Connection

    Re: Get Array from Array

There may be no simple way to do it. If you can make use of IndexOf to find the separators, then you can use Array.Copy to copy up to that point. That may prove awkward, in which case the alternative...
  26. VS 2010 Re: Need help with calculating MAC address sequences.... I appreciate the help!

Concatenation has some interesting impacts, too. Strings are immutable, so you can't change them. What happens when you concatenate two strings is that a new chunk of memory is allocated of the...

  29. VS 2010 Re: Need help with calculating MAC address sequences.... I appreciate the help!

The cost you were seeing was probably the cost of adding to the control. That action adds a LOT of overhead that you don't want to pay if you can avoid it. Every time you add something to the textbox...
  30. Re: Make Label Always Equal to Variable Value/ How to run Variable Changed Event?

Well, I'd have to say that deviation from VB was a bracing change.

Integer variables don't have events. Using a property is certainly a pretty easy way to handle things, but it may not be...

  37. VS 2010 Re: Need help with calculating MAC address sequences.... I appreciate the help!

Break it. It should take only a second to calculate the full 16.7 million. If it is hanging for even a few seconds then something is going wrong. Stepping into the code should show what is happening....
  38. VS 2010 Re: Need help with calculating MAC address sequences.... I appreciate the help!

That code that I showed would hit all iterations in a defined order. The order would be:

    0 : 0 : 0 through 255
    0 : 1 : 0 through 255

and so on. Nothing recursive about that. It hits all...
