  1. Re: Q: About CodePages and Languages and Reading From Files

    BTW:

    If you just want to dump the buffer into a String it is trivial. Instead of:

    ReadAFile = StrConv(bBytes, vbFromUnicode, 1033)

    You use:
  2. Re: Q: About CodePages and Languages and Reading From Files

    First throw that FromCPString away as hard as you can.

    Your:

    ReadAFile = StrConv(bBytes, vbFromUnicode, 1033)

    ... would do everything you need, assuming that's what you need to do. But I...
  3. Re: Message Box that allows user intervention

    What's wrong with Debug.Print and Stop (or IDE breakpoints)?

    You can also just show a custom Form non-modally if this isn't IDE debugging.

  5. Re: dump a listview (headers & data) into a mdb or delimited database

    All I can do is shake my head. :eek:
  7. Re: Q: About CodePages and Languages and Reading From Files

    Not sure what you mean.

    InStrB() happily accepts Byte arrays as both the buffer to be searched and the search target. There is no character conversion involved - aside from possibly when...
  8. Re: dump a listview (headers & data) into a mdb or delimited database

    What puzzles me is why this question even arises.

    Controls are not data structures, and a ListView can't be used to gather input... so why on earth would you ever need to "export" the contents of...
  9. Re: Q: About CodePages and Languages and Reading From Files

    That's why I posted my Bytarr class in the CodeBank, Schmidt gave a link above. It shows how you can perform string-like operations (such as using InStrB() calls) to parse within Byte array buffers.
  10. Re: Q: About CodePages and Languages and Reading From Files

    I can sympathize though.

    I work on a lot of really crusty old stuff where people had started down a certain path and unraveling it would require a ton of work. Most of the time I give estimates...

  13. Re: Q: About CodePages and Languages and Reading From Files

    As far as I can tell he has (or thinks he has/wants) ANSI data in the file. Doesn't matter anyway: binary I/O is binary I/O and character encoding doesn't come into play. Get/Put against Byte...
  14. Re: Q: About CodePages and Languages and Reading From Files

    It'll probably "break" the controls and other use of text.

    All he needs to do is convert his String to a Byte array using his hard-coded LCID and then write that using Put. But if he can't figure...

    Re: What does ListView really do?

    I'm not sure why ListViews have come into vogue in recent times. If all you use is the Report view you have probably chosen the wrong control.

    Perhaps the problem is appearance? The moldly...
  16. Re: Q: About CodePages and Languages and Reading From Files

    You are doomed.

    If you Put a String you always get conversion to ANSI.

    F = FreeFile(0)
    Open "sample.txt" For Binary As #F
    S = "Hi there!"
    Put #F, , S '<--- converts to ANSI...

    Re: Why does MSCOMCTL.OCX give me an error?

    IE killbits have nothing to do with normal use of ActiveX libraries. Those are used to secure your system against browser-based exploits.

    MSCOMCTL.OCX 6.1.97.86 is pretty old. I think my guess...
  18. Re: Q: About CodePages and Languages and Reading From Files

    Do explicit conversions both to and from ANSI using the same LCID every time.
  19. Re: Q: About CodePages and Languages and Reading From Files

    StrConv() is very happy to have a Byte array passed to it.

    Of course characters over 127 give fits. That's what make different codepages different.
  20. Re: Q: About CodePages and Languages and Reading From Files

    It is still far from clear what you are trying to do.

    If the data is ANSI and you have a codepage mismatch then do a StrConv() with the correct LCID. Pretty simple. But that can't translate...

  22. [VB6] Bytarr - String-style operations by wrapping a Byte array

    People seem to get tangled up in their underwear a lot trying to fiddle with binary data in String variables. Often they run into nightmares where they convert Unicode "to Unicode" and then back...
  23. Re: Q: About CodePages and Languages and Reading From Files

    Egad.

    Stop using Strings for binary data. How many times can we repeat that warning?
  24. Re: Q: About CodePages and Languages and Reading From Files

    The only characters in common across codepages are 0-127, and even then a few of those get yanked around by some software. There is no LCID 1252. That's probably a confusion of the character set...
  25. Re: Passing an array as argument between 2 executables

    I'd back up and ask myself why there are two Projects at all. Aside from that I can't decode statements like "I need Project1 to load a form pertaining to Project2..."

    "Array" doesn't tell us...
  26. Re: How could i import a .MDB file that is a split of another back-end database?

    Without actually seeing the database that has linked tables in it I couldn't say why you can't use it from a VB6 program. There certainly isn't anything preventing this generally. You simply open...

    Re: Why does MSCOMCTL.OCX give me an error?

    Very weird.

    All I can imagine is that you have had some copy of MSCOMCTL.OCX registered in the past that has the 2.1 interfaces, but then ripped it away and dumped an older copy with only 2.0...

    I assume you saw VB6 IDE cannot load MSCOMCTL.OCX after update KB 2687323 where the problem was tracked to not having Upgrade ActiveX Controls checked?

    Re: Why does MSCOMCTL.OCX give me an error?

    Good luck with that. Microsoft can barely give attention to .Net issues, let alone do much about VB6.

    Re: Why does MSCOMCTL.OCX give me an error?

    The "automatic upgrade" option is about type library interface version numbering, something normally invisible to VB6 programmers. This is entirely separate from the file-level version numbering of...

    Re: Why does MSCOMCTL.OCX give me an error?

    Nobody ever seems to follow up with the actual cause when (if?) they ever get past this problem. Instead we're treated to a long list of random stabs they've taken at it. This isn't the only...

    Re: Am I a dinosaur? DAO vs ADO

    No, but it is a pretty awkward thing to do. If you insist on doing this you'll want to use linked table techniques, you're stuck with ODBC, etc.

    Better to just dump DAO and move on. But if you...

  36. Re: How could i import a .MDB file that is a split of another back-end database?

    Keep in mind that MS Access is a parasite on Jet. It stores all sorts of metadata into private "storages" within the MDB file (Forms, etc.). What you seem to want to call a "split" sounds like an...
