    Access a remote server

I'm working with someone who has given me his server name and I connected to it using VPN. In order to access the files on that server I assume I have to map a network drive. When I map the network...
  4. MsOf10 Re: Simulate database in use by someone else

I understand the bad practice but after trying with just the one folder being shared and not being able to find it, I shared the whole drive. The complication here (and probably the reason I can't...
  5. MsOf10 Re: Simulate database in use by someone else

Okay this is embarrassing. Wife wife's and my PC are on the same home network and we both use XP as our OS. What I did on my PC was to select the "share this folder on the network" for the folder...
  6. MsOf10 Re: Simulate database in use by someone else

I'll try accessing the database from my wife's PC.
  7. MsOf10 Simulate database in use by someone else

Without getting into locking strategies, I'd like to be able to simulate the situation where someone else has an Access database open and I want to write to it via Excel VBA. My user tells me that...
  8. Re: [RESOLVED] Restricting data in an SQL query

Thank you both. I had to qualify a couple of the fields as follows and now it works.

    rs.Open "Select distinct [SalesOrders&Vendors].ORDER_NUMBER from [SalesOrders&Vendors] " _
    ...
  9. Re: Restricting data in an SQL query

Here's what I'm doing but it says I'm missing an operator.

    rs.Open "Select distinct ORDER_NUMBER from [SalesOrders&Vendors] Where INSIDE_SALES_REP = '" & strInsideRep & "'" _
    ...
  10. Re: Restricting data in an SQL query

How do I incorporate the RepName given that I only want to consider the set of OrderNumbers in Table1 where I have a match for a particular RepName?

In other words Table1 may have 100,000...
  11. Re: Restricting data in an SQL query

Yes I guess but I've never done one and don't have any idea if in fact that's the way to go, but throw something at me and I'll give it a try.
  12. [RESOLVED] Restricting data in an SQL query

    I have two tables:

    Table1 has OrderNumber and RepName
    Table2 has OrderNumber and PartNumbers

Is it possible to create SQL which given the RepName only returns OrderNumbers that exist in both...

    [RESOLVED] Worksheets() = Sheets() ?

Is there any difference at all in doing for example

    With Worksheets("Sheet1")

    as opposed to this?

    With Sheets("Sheet1")
  15. Re: Copy several rows replacing a fewer number of rows on another sheet.

Perhaps my implementation was wrong but when there are more rows in sheet1 then there are in sheet2, rows below the desired target range on sheet2 are overwritten.

Thanks all but I'm going to go...
  16. Re: Copy several rows replacing a fewer number of rows on another sheet.

Thanks for the suggestion but what I have now works and at this point I'd only change it if there were a simple built-in alternative.
  17. Re: Copy several rows replacing a fewer number of rows on another sheet.

That's essentially what I am doing in my "not very satisfactory" way with the previously unstated fact that the number of rows in both sheets are variable. Seeing as you guys haven't come up with a...
  18. Re: Copy several rows replacing a fewer number of rows on another sheet.

I tried that but there's cell formatting in the heading above what I called Row1 and when I do an insert all the inserted rows get the heading's format.
  19. Re: Copy several rows replacing a fewer number of rows on another sheet.

Well I solved it but not in a very satisfactory way. What I did was to either add or delete (via VBA) enough rows in Sheet2 to make the counts equal and then a straight copy/paste works.
  20. [RESOLVED] Copy several rows replacing a fewer number of rows on another sheet.

I'm trying to do something that I thought would be simple but I haven't been successful:(

I have 9 rows on sheet1 and I want to copy the those rows to sheet2 replacing 8 rows of data. The 9th row...
  21. Re: Excel formula to count matches

I transferred all the cell data into a Variant array and matched the words there using typical looping code. It's a lot faster than looping through the sheet data although it's still not as fast as...
  22. Re: Excel formula to count matches

I assume I need some sort of matrix matching function. Could VLOOKUP be used in some way?
  23. Re: Excel formula to count matches

Thanks Sid, perhaps I don't understand what you are showing me but I don't see how that helps me. I have this:
    106399
and I want the count of 2 for the first set of lines and 1 for the second. And...
  24. Re: Excel formula to count matches

Yes, I can easily write a macro that does it but I need something lighting fast and so I thought there might be a builtin function I could use in VBA.
  25. [RESOLVED] Excel formula to count matches

Given the following in cells C to F of Row 1

this is a test (each word in its own cell)

and this in cells C to F of row 2

is this (each word in its own cell)

is there a formula that will...

MsOf10 Re: Excel Row Height Mystery

Thanks, you are absolutely right! I thought I had checked that.
  27. MsOf10 Re: What Don't I Understand About Excel File Versions

In fooling around with the settings I must have turned something on because I now see a couple of autosaved versions in Info|Versions. That's good but does that mean that I can't go back to a...

MsOf10 [RESOLVED] Excel Row Height Mystery

I have a workbook that has two sheets where row 1 in both sheets has its Row Height set to the same value. Visually however they are plainly not the same height. And yes, I've triple-checked that...
  29. MsOf10 What Don't I Understand About Excel File Versions

When I go to File|Options|Save I see this.

But even though I save periodically while working on a workbook, when I look at Info|Versions it always says "There are no previous versions of...
  30. Re: Fastest possible way to retrieve data

What I did was to add a second 0-width column to the Vendor Name combobox and loaded that column with Vendor ID which is an Index. Then instead of searching on the non-indexed Vendor Name I searched...
  31. Re: Fastest possible way to retrieve data

Si, I'm not sure what you mean when you ask if "VendorId [is] the same for equal values of VendorName". The Vendor Names are unique and each one has its own unique VendorID.

    I'll try just...
  32. Re: Fastest possible way to retrieve data

Yes it's Access and I'm currently doing this.

    rs.Open "Select * from Items1 Where [Vendor Name] = '" & cboVendorName.Text & "'", gConn

But it currently (without that index being present) takes...
  33. [RESOLVED] Fastest possible way to retrieve data

I'm working with a database that has a table with over 600,000 records. Two of the fields in that table are Vendor Name and Part Number and I'd like to get all the parts numbers for a given vendor as...

    MsOf10 Why two different warnings?

Just a curiosity question by why when opening Excel files that contain code and both being xlsm files do I sometimes get this warning
    104199
    and sometimes I get this?

    Re: Working with menu bars

Thanks, but in Excel 2010 "Add-Ins" isn't a button but rather the default name given to the ribbon group when any custom menu item is added and the caption only refers to the menu items in that group.
