69% of PC and 85% of Tablet Users Would Like Their PCs and Tablets to Have the Same I
A Windows 8 Developer Preview was released several months ago and an updated preview is due to be released any time (word on the street is end of February). When you look at Windows 8, and you consider statistics such as the one in my headline, you can see that things could get interesting when Windows 8 hits the market.
iYogi did a survey through their iYogi Insights initiative. They surveyed 1400 customers to understand how they would adopt Windows 8 across multiple devices. The key headline that iYogi was promoting from their survey is that the Windows 8 launch will accelerate the shipment of tablets. This is based on some of their results that show 69% of PC and 85% of tablet users affirm that they would like their PCs and tablet interfaces to have the same look and feel. It is this desire for a similar look and feel across devices that has the potential to make the coming of Windows 8 Tablets into the market very disruptive.
There were a number of other interesting statistics to come from their research. For example, only 15% of the people who responded said they had a tablet already. This indicates there is still a large market to be served in the tablet space. Of the people who did have tablets, 57% stated they like the idea of the Windows 8 touch-screen interface and would consider upgrading given the opportunity. The information I have didn't say whether these were iPad owners versus other tablets.
Within their summary of their research, iYogi stats that approximately 40 million users have adopted tablets in the United States. This is about a 13% adoption level. They state that according to TechCrunch this will increase to 40% by 2015.
The survey also touched on the concept of tiles and a tile interface such as what Metro provides. 57% of the respondents would like to use the live Titles interface provided in Windows 8. In fact, 53% of the respondents stated they would want to work on the Metro Interface.
You can find the analysis of this survey on the iyogi site here. In the final slide of their research, they comment that the 1400 respondents were people on the Windows platform. This might bias the audience a bit. Even so, the stats are still interesting to consider.

I suspect that if Win8 actually does ship with Metro it'll be a total bust.
The only thing to save it might be a mode to disable Metro that doesn't break a bunch of other stuff, as the known hack does now.
In the meantime there are plenty of tablets on the market shipping with Win7, and they work fine. Even better if you install Vista over that. ;) No more washed-out pastel colors!
Re: 69% of PC and 85% of Tablet Users Would Like Their PCs and Tablets to Have the Sa
I seriously doubt that survey. On the other hand, to be perfectly honest, I am well aware that my opinion is way outside the norm for this topic. I tend to agree with dilettante, but I have always thought tablets were a pretty dumb idea....and look at how well THAT opinion is doing.
Re: 69% of PC and 85% of Tablet Users Would Like Their PCs and Tablets to Have the Sa
I think Microsoft is making a bold move with Windows 8 and Metro but I can see their long-term strategy and I like it. The Windows GUI has been evolving to a point of singularity because they know that the thing that's going to drive market share and sales is cross-familiarity. The easier Joe-user can transition between desktop-tablet-phone the more likely he will buy a compatible device; after all, isn't the entire PC industry BUILT on compatibility and familiarity?
I recently played around with a Windows phone in an AT&T store and was blown away. I loved it. It made the Android OS running on my HTC Thunderbolt seem like a ramshackle hack-job barely holding itself together as an operating system and the iOS on my iTouch seem like an antique. Personally, I'd love to see tablets running its equivalent and I can see the benefits of desktops doing the same. I think Microsoft has a winner in Windows 8.

I'm not sure I understand title - is it incomplete?
I'm not sure I fully understand the purpose for that "survey" either. If they only questioned current Windows users then answer is likely to be "yes". Does that make Win8 outlook any better? I really don't think so.
MS lost this battle before they even though of getting into it. They should stick whith what they have (corporate users) and get out of mobile business (and also forget the forgettable metro style).
Re: 69% of PC and 85% of Tablet Users Would Like Their PCs and Tablets to Have the Sa
I disagree. MS has to be in mobile to stay relevant, or else they may turn into the Kodak of the computer world. We may move primarly portable, in which case MS would be crazy to cede the field to their competitors. I can also see that most people would like one interface....in theory, but in practice, the key to the desktop isn't the large monitors (well, a bit), and it is increasingly not the CPU power (which is getting better and better), instead, it is the difference in the way the two tools are used. For many of us, a Metro front-end won't work well for the way we want to work with the computer. If the transition is easy, though, I could see it. At the last view, the transition was nearly unusable, though, so it remains to be seen whether the future of Windows 8 is bright, or DOA.
Re: 69% of PC and 85% of Tablet Users Would Like Their PCs and Tablets to Have the Sa
I understand how having the same look-feel at the mobile and the desktop would appear appealing at first. However, I can't see anyone using the mobile/tablet in the same way as they would use the desktop, at least not at the current state of things. Therefore, I completely fail to see the reasoning behind pushing the exact same OS for both platforms.
Having said that, I think that MS is now in a position where they would have to wage an uneven, uphill battle to push through with their mobile/tablet strategy and eventually get double digits of market share. I agree with Shaggy that they have get into this market in order to stay relevant. But I think that a different branch in the OS tree would provide a larger degree of freedom to innovate in the mobile branch while keeping enterprise/old-school users happy at the same time.

You know, when IBM sold their PC Unit to Lenovo many thought IBM made a huge mistake but as it turned out it was the smartest move ever: they concentrated their efforts on what they do best.
That was a win-win-win move for IBM-Lenovo-Consumers. MS should follow the best and do somethig similar - their line of mobile products needs refreshing, new brains, ideas, etc but the botom line is if it stays with Microsoft it will be DOA as it has been many times in the past.

Interesting idea that might work.

Have you used a Windows Phone? While my primary phone is a Droid, I have a Windows Phone too. I'd call the Windows Phone "fresh and new" as far as the interface. The iPhone and Android interfaces are a bit more "old school". The live tiles and some of the other features put WP in a more "fresher" category than the others.
Of course this is just my opinion.
Brad!
Re: 69% of PC and 85% of Tablet Users Would Like Their PCs and Tablets to Have the Sa
I have used Windows Phone but not for a long time - it's not my taste of vodka. :)
Droids are not my taste either but most of them are far more superior than WP and therefore are more apealing to most consumers.
I don't find "tiles" on WP to be fresher - again, for my taste it's an ugly interface.
iOS may look like an old school but it's damn superb and there is nothing even close in terms of quality and efficiency.
