Discussion regarding gregorian calender

Hi
im not asking for help here, im just creating a discussion

its about the gregorian calender

i got bored one night and was thinking about the hype surrounding year 2000 worldwide system crash, and the predicted system crash coming in the year 10000.

so i was thinking about a calender project i had in a book years ago when i first started learning vb and decided to create my own gregorian calender class.

after a little research trying to find out when christ was born exactly i found it was not likely he was born on dec 25 and i decided well if the church cant even decide when he was born then basing a calender on that is pointless so i decided to find out what day was 01\01\00. just for all you guys who might want to know, the first day of the gregorian calender is sunday.

anyway with this information i found that instead of a class containing hundreds of lines of code i could find out what day, month, year, even time( although i didnt implement that, i used the leap year) with a couple of really simple functions. using modulus.

so why is it that something so simple was not and even today is not implemented in systems worldwide, i can even find the day 10000000000 days bc, find the month 25000000000 years 1 month 5 days using a simple function which is a couple of lines long.

i'm not sure if excel uses the same methods i came to make, but they use a number to calculate days and months etc.

what do you think?

I'm mainly just an applications programmer where our projects are on internal servers and the user just runs the exe so I'm out of my league on this. Part of something I'm assigned to, but really am just involved in, is allowing access to some documents from outside the company. The plan is to put the PDF documents on a server the public can get to, password protect the documents, and provide the password to the people intended to see them.

In other words:

I'll send you a letter with a URL and a password in it. You'll key in the URL and it will bring up the document prompting for the password. If it matches the document will be displayed as a PDF.

I'm so out of my league on this that I don't know the right questions to ask. Is this an industry norm? I view PDFs from web sites quite a bit when surfing. Are there some security considerations to look into?

Hi All
not sure if I am posting on the right place but I am looking to create a search tool that show me a data. Please look on below info:

I created a combobox1 that had 3 selection which is "MSN" , "RNC" and "RBS"
Next I created a text input that we can type in the site ID
last I created a button called "Get data"

And I have more than 1000 data related info:

The run will be as following:
When I select "MSN" and type in "NBU001" in the text input should get below info after hitting "get data"

Site ID=NBU0001
IP=0.0.0.0 (Or any digits)
OSS=SouthEast

Same thing with others

When I select "RNC" and type in "SBC0001" in the text input should get below info after hitting "get data"

Site ID=SBC0001
IP=1.1.1.1 (Or any digits)
OSS=Northeast

and same with NodeB

I have a list of all info required to add to the tool as excel sheet:see below example, remember I had more than 1000 line like below:

MSN NBU0001   0.0.0.0  SouthEast
RNC  SBC0001   1.1.1.1  NorthEast

Hi everyone.

I absolutely rocked in VB6, I wrote application after application with ease. It was easy and intuitive and I could crank out the code.

So now I'm looking to learn a language more updated to the internet age. I'm trying Visual Basic 2010 but I'm simply not picking it up. I know it's called Basic but it's not, well, Basic. Looking around the net I see some people saying C# worked better for them so I'm thinking of trying that. I have some experience with the original C language (still have my copy of Kernighan and Ritchie's book) so I'm hoping I have better luck with C#.

Anybody else tried C#? Is it easier to learn?

Thanks.

Mandatory BYOD?

I don't have a regular "wage slave" job myself anymore, so for most of my contract work BYOD is a given. But the majority of people actively programming for pay probably have a fairly standard full work week on the premises.

Ramifications of mandatory BYOD on workers and employers (http://www.zdnet.com/ramifications-of-mandatory-byod-on-workers-and-employers-7000014822/) was interesting to read. Does anyone expect to run into this soon? Are you seeing it already?

Or is this more likely to be an issue for people doing entirely different kinds of work? Perhaps limited to non productive ;) occupations such as managers, administrators, handlers ("Project Managers"), and other Big Idea folks who are normally either on the phone or warming a seat in some conference room?

Another side of this coin:

---Quote---
Most likely, most companies that will mandate BYOD, will restrict employee-supplied gear to a short list of phones, tablets, and notebooks. This is much the same as they did when the company was supplying the gear. It is practically impossible for IT staff to adequately support all brands and models of gear that employees will bring to work if left to their own devices. This short list of acceptable gear will require new hires to buy new equipment to qualify, even if they already own their own non-supported equivalents.
---End Quote---
I can see people suing successfully over this kind of employment discrimination. If such specific device limitations are eventually legally eroded the "IT Boys" standing out on the loading dock smoking may end up jumping to accomodate a free-for-all device ecosystem.

As some commenters pointed out there are lots of trades where you are required to arrive with tools purchased out-of-pocket. Maybe BYOD is inevitable?

Adding Files to DataGridView then exporting it into excel.

Hi I just finished my firs program and now I want to upgrade it. I need the program to take info from the text inserted and calculated and transfer it to a DataGridView. From there all the items in the DataGridView should be transferred to a excel document.
This is the code fro my program:

   Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click
        Dim num1, num2, num3, num4, num5, num6, num7, num8, product As Single, weight As Single, quantity As Single, total As Single
        num1 = TextBox1.Text
        num2 = TextBox2.Text
        num3 = TextBox3.Text
        num4 = TextBox4.Text
        num5 = TextBox5.Text
        num6 = Val(8.3)
        num7 = Val(1000000)
        num8 = Val(7.85)
        weight = num1 * num2 * num3 * num8 / num7
        product = num1 * num2 * num3 * num4 * num6 / num7
        total = quantity * product
        quantity = product * num5
        MaskedTextBox1.Text = weight
        MaskedTextBox2.Text = product
        MaskedTextBox3.Text = quantity
        MaskedTextBox1.Text = CStr(weight) + " kg"

Now when you click button 2 it should send the data too the DataGridView.
The data should be in this format:
Quantity(textbox5) Length(textbox1) x(just an x) Width(textbox2) x Thickness (textbox3) R(Currency in rand)product (maskedTextbox2) R Total(MaskedTextbox3). This Should Look Like This:

10 300x200x12 R74.70 R747.00
Then once all the items are there they should be transferred to an excel sheet in almost the same sequence.
10 300 300 12 R74.70 R747.00

Any help would be appreciated as I know basically nothing about coding.

Dim num1, num2, num3, num4, num5, num6, num7, num8, product As Single, weight As Single, quantity As Single, total As Single
num1 = TextBox1.Text
num2 = TextBox2.Text
num3 = TextBox3.Text
num4 = TextBox4.Text
num5 = TextBox5.Text
num6 = Val(8.3)
num7 = Val(1000000)
num8 = Val(7.85)
weight = num1 * num2 * num3 * num8 / num7
product = num1 * num2 * num3 * num4 * num6 / num7
total = quantity * product
quantity = product * num5
MaskedTextBox1.Text = weight
MaskedTextBox2.Text = product
MaskedTextBox3.Text = quantity
MaskedTextBox1.Text = CStr(weight) + " kg"

The web site above has a C# downloadable project. I converted the C# project into a VS2010 solution (Class library for Tim's classes and a Windows form project to try it out).

*Project Description*

ClosedXML makes it easier for developers to create Excel 2007/2010 files. It provides a nice object oriented way to manipulate the files (similar to VBA) without dealing with the hassles of XML Documents. It can be used by any .NET language like C# and Visual Basic (VB).

* Home http://closedxml.codeplex.com/
* Caveats: read thru the documentation and issue tracker to see if this library is right for you
