AAAAAARRRGGGGGHHHHHH HE'S CONTRIBUTING TO THE SPREAD OF DOS ATTACKS DUE TO RAW SOCKET SUPPORT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

KILL HIM!!! MAIM HIS CHILDREN!!!

Kiddin' :) I'm sure you have a firewall :) The problem with raw sockets in a consumer OS (which doesn't include 2000's later addition) is that your average user won't have a firewall, or the knowledge of basic security.

I found that building 30 computers would be a waste of several weekends, so I ordered them from Dell. No regrets.

30 PCs at home...man you must have 2 or 3 in every room! :D :D

jk

for business i can see buying a dell, as corporate users aren't exactly overclocking, crunching SETI, and playing Quake 3 on corporate machines. plus dell is reliable.

but for home? CB is a must! :)

if you own 98 or ME and have a small budget: get XP!
If you own 2000: don't bother!

aknisely
Aug 12th, 2001, 09:59 AM
Well, assuming my home has ten rooms, yes that'd be mathematically accurate

I even put on 3 extra machines for the bosses to use at home.

So...

Pzah!!!

manufacturers have warranties too :p and if they don't you buy a replacement component that is bigger and better

i never use customer service cuz i upgrade my OS anyway and sony tech spt sux0rz :p

i'd rather overclock and have optimal cooling and a 400w PSU

just a matter of personal preference i guess :D :D :D

Useless - ignore it !

okay, I admit, I've been using it for about a month (pro & home editions). The actual one is out OCTOBER 25th & will be the same price as the others - £100 ish.

Leave it, everythings done for dumbasses - looks nice (questionable that bit) & hide all the functionality, MS have done a u turn & are basically saying "here you go, this os works, and there's lots of pretty screens you can look at, but you won't bugger this one up & call our support so much"

i heard XP was gonna be $30

according to the review of RC1 done by AnAndTech.com, it really really sucked. You need a machine that was 1.3x better to get the same performance.

im good with 2k. now only if i can get OpenGL to work...

right on, XP is Win2k for newbies who don't know their RAM from a floppy disk

On a Tech forum i use, somebody said something like the following. They tried to make XP idiot proof and merely made it difficult to use.

BTW: Windows 98 SE seems to install with some option which does not show files in the Windows folder. Instead you get a Picture box which includes a message saying you can hurt the system by fooling with these files. There is a place to click if you want to see the files in spite of the warning. After you have viewed the files a few times, Explorer relents and displays the files just as for other folders.

Might XP get less idiot proof with use?

Not really Guv  , it saves the screens & options that you've been in before, so if you've managed to sieve through the crap & actually find the useful windows settings it's a bit easier the second time, but on the whole, not really.

win98 - best for games (ME's crap too)
win2000 - best for work

sorted !

Well WinXP has 4 versions... Home Personal, Professional, Server, Advance Server.

in order of
$90-98
$199-213
$400-413
$1023-1040

No, it's not gonna be better than Win2k Pro.

Who in their right mind would want to run a server on XP?

After you have viewed the files a few times, Explorer relents and displays the files just as for other folders.

Might XP get less idiot proof with use?I've never found that it gets used to it, 98 just asks me every time unless I turn off the 'view folder as web page' option. Maybe I'm missing something? Win2k at least asks you only once, the first time after it starts that you go into the folder, and it doesn't ask you again unless you restart.

I doubt if XP will be any less protective than 98 already is, I am more inclined to expect double the number of warning screens.

I was quite annoyed when Win2k warned me 'there is no need to change these files' when I looked in Program Files for the first time. I find it mildly insulting somehow, as if it's saying I'm stupid.

Ha, Actually it means Xtra Porno:)
Nah, it means eXPerience.

I hate WinXP(Beta2).
I mean the ICONs are all big and stuff(in the folder view). You can change it for once, but when you view that folder again, it still is that large...
It's basically for beginners, in our world, it's considered BABIES:)

So they must design a crap for "Adults" like us:), but though I'm only 12.
