OK, I downloaded XP from Microshaft (RC1), installed, and noticed something that really p*ssed me off ....
The "Line Up Icons" right click option has been removed !!!! Now instead we have (in another sub-menu) right click-->arrange icons by-->aline to gride ....... The aline to grid setting is just like "auto arrange" in that is is ALWAYS on once you check it. XP psses me off because anytime you copy, shortcut, move, or add to the desktop, XP automatically places the icon in THE FIRST AVAILABLE grid slot INSTEAD OF WHERE YOU CLICKED TO PLACE IT. When the grid is off, everything is fine ...
HERE IS MY QUESTION ....
I need to write a control to add the LINE UP ICONS back to the right click menu, or even, to enable grid and then immediatly disable it... I am used to putting and moving my icons very close to each other, arranging the way I want, and then constantly click line up icons. I like the grid feature, but its just that when you copy stuff to the desktop it puts it in stupid places that you cant find...
Anyways, I have no clue where to start to right a control of the such... I am good with VB5 and 6 but need some serious help with my new quest....
Again, I want to know how to add the LINE UP ICONS to a right click explorer extension...
thanks all.

yea but now instead of line up icons you have 4 types of line up icons
you have
Arrange Icons By>
Name
Size
Type
Modified
so you can still line up the icons but you have options.
I Like XP RC1 it's great Microsoft has really made a winner.
for just being a release canadate it's more stable than all of
the other windows OSes.

Jason, apparently you completely missed the point :
Microsft has Always had "NAME, DATE, TYPE, SIZE", ALWAYS ...
And plus, when you do that, its the same *****ing thing as auto arrange (As in it scrunches all you icons to the top left) - When you do arrange by "DATE" it scrunches them all up ..
LINE UP ICONS, on the other hand, just alines the icons to a "grid" ... From wherever they are at...
(I am talking primaraly about the desktop)
SO, I dont wanna use ALINE TO GRID because when you unzip files and stuff, I cant find where the hell windows put my stuff - it is supposed to go where I clicked the mouse, but instead it "AUTO ARRANGES" I dont want that.
But yes, you are correct. RC1 of XP is really kewl. I dont know if you know this or not, but all XP is, is NT 5.1 (Windows 2000 with bull**** pictures stuffed all in it) So of course it is a winner.
BUT YOU ARE Wrong in several key points: IE6 crashes and the new stupid ass non-turn-offable active desktop is very unstable. An example of active desktop BS is when you drag an outline around icons, and the desktop refreshes automatically by windows while you are doing it, it leaves that outline printed on the screen unitl you press F5 [which is a VERY big problem in Winme])
Also, RC1 isnt BETA 3 ... The core compenents are done, anything upgraded in Final has nothing to do with the OS, unless a giant hella hugmunga bug is discovered. ....
Another thing that pissed me off was microshaft removed the volume control from the systray, and the systray loads backwards and un-orginized.
Overall though, I really like XP - But thats beside the point - I sitll wanna know how to put LINE UP ICONS back in the menu :-)

I'm not having all of these problems you seam to be having.
I realize XP is a spit shined 2000 to be made to look like
Mac OS X .
Aranging Icons was always to grid.
I have
2 computers running server 2000
2 computers running XP RC1
1 computer running Pro 2000
1 computer running win98SE
I am very aware of the differances
the computer I use all the time is running XP
has more junk running on it and never craps out
I have tried to make it freak out and nothing yet.
maybe you should send a report to Microsoft
on where they have gone wrong.... :D
hope you get your answer
unfortunately I don't posses the skills in VB to help:(

Ok, maybe I just use my computer too much ..
See, what my problem is (I know what I am doing, and I dont want help dialogs showing me what to do) ... You know ..
The things that piss me off are things that nobody else cares about, apparently : For example: the line up icons thing, and like I said, IE6 crashes ... Let me explain just so you know ...
There was nothing in the world wrong with IE4. It was fast, reliable, it was fine. Then IE 5 came out and was even better - BUT IE5.5 got stupid. Stupid from my standpoint. When you loaded a page, and had multiple windows open, you could no longer instantly jump to another program - If IE5 had focus, you could not click GO and click on another window - IE has to cantact the server, blah blah, and about 2 seconds later it will white out every program on your desktop and finally open the other app. Plus it was very unstable.
True, IE6 is more stable, but I have been having this thing happen where after it does that ^ obove listed stuff ^ then it opens a full screen non closable version of the LINKS... Hahaha, *** ? Its a small bug but OK ...
And I defy you to argue with me about IE5 and even 6, because everyone I know has the same problem. You just have to know what you are looking for..... sure sure sure, I am picky, but for good reason. There is not reason for stuff to be like it is sometimes.... CASE IN POINT: Line up icons. Ok, aline to grid is EXCELLET , and many people love it - But why the F|_|CK go out of the way to intentionally REMOVE line up icons ? Thats just STUPID. What is it, a 1 line code ? I mean jesus, why couldnt they have Line up icons and Aline to grid ? Aint no point in taking it out, you know ... Thats why it makes me mad/
Anyways, if you want to know what I am talking about with IE5.5 and active desktop, go use a WinMe computer, turn on active desktop, and try to surf the net - The try to play with the desktop - God d@mn its enough to want to shoot mr gates !
I can see the advantages of one click does all OS's, but I am a power user and dont want that kinda sh#t - I aint knockin it, I am just trying to prove a point that there was no reason for removing line up icons ... ! ! ! LOL :-)
Wow, this turned ito a chat room, huh ? Hahaha, well thanks buddy, Ill talk to you soooonnn.. no, in the next 5 minutes I mean !
Later.
