I don’t know why I am writing this, I just am. I have thought about making my own OS from time to time. Mostly when Windows is crashing non stop or when Linux can’t run the program I need. I have thought of most of the problems with making and OS in this day in age. Thinking had it been 10 years ago this may have worked. Just a few of the problems behind making an OS in this day in age.

1. Supporting hardware

a. Display adapters
b. CD Rom Drives
c. CD burners
d. DVD drive
e. SCISI Cards
f. Network Cards
g. Modems
h. Hard Drives
i. USB
j. 1394 Or Fire wire
k. Disk Drives
l. Web Cams
m. Sound Cards
n. Monitors
o. Memory
p. Mother Boards
q. Printers
r. Jazz Drives
s. Zip Drives
t. Serial Ports
u. Mice

2. Supporting Software

a. Video Capturing (AKA Twain type stuff)
b. Drivers for all of the hardware
c. Screen Resolution
d. Windows compatible
e. Linux compatible
f. UNIX compatible
g. TCP/IP
h. All other networking protocols
i. Jpg and other Picture format compatible
j. Java
k. Direct X and Open GL compatible

Those are just some of the known problems with starting an OS today. But you know what there needs to be a website on something like this, like people need to have bits of code and help files on how to get this stuff to work. I admit Windows and Linux are good, but to think if people would start making there own OS, maybe Windows and other companies would make better stuff that does not mess up. Because if people are making there own that are compatible with there’s there business is gone. And if we all work together, and put simple drivers in a Basic type language, because most people can convert basic to C++ or visual basic, or something like that. Please list any ideas on this, if you want you can e-mail me at Daniel@mdaugherty.com. If anyone wants to try this, drop me a line. Just thought I would post this for the hell of it.

I started laughing at the start. No offense, but you'll never get past the kernel. :)

Here's an idea. Why not pick a "standard" computer specification. E.g. Pick a particular video card, sound card etc. and tailor your system towards that (much like the x-box, the indrema etc.). Most of windows problems stem from the fact that they can't control which peripherals people stick in their computers. In the days of the Amiga's and Macs things where much more tightly controlled and therefore much more stable.

Good luck,

SD

I see now, having re-read - you're just iterating problems faced?

Yeah, I am, and I was thinking maybe if there was a site, where it talked about crap like this, maybe something could happen because no one person can do this. Just some thoughts.
