PPPLLLLEEEAAAASSSEEE GIve me the job. My Girlfriend/Wife has left me, my pet buggie has just died, I've beeen on prozac for the last 6 months whilst going through a bottle of whiskey a day and I'm feeling suicidal. If I got this job it might solve all my problems.

Short and snappy. The covering letter sells your CV, not necessarily you. It should be custom written for the job your after, and tell them stuff about why you want it. Apparently you've got to do "research" on the company first .
I think the idea is that your CV is constant - the same one goes out to everyone, and he letter changes from company to company.
Hope this helps :)

Thanks Behemoth.
Slight problem though; I don't know what the company is because it is via an agency.
Normally I just email my CV saying:
Dear Sirs,
I would like to be considered for the position with ref. JS/GN/ASP as detailed on Jobserve.
Please find my CV attached and note contact details below.
Thank you

here's a screen shot so you can see what I mean

As well as this I'd put in one or two lines that summarize my appropriate skills (Analyst Programmer, blah years experience VB 1.0 with Dogbody Bank etc.) so that even before reading your CV they think - "yeah - this one looks good". I guess we don't need to tell you that this is your client's first chance to see how professionally you do things, how clearly you think and can express yourself etc. so it has to be pretty much perfect ;) .
