If you have to ask that question then its SuSE 7.1:D

Yeah, I was thinking that I would like to try it, but then I realized that there are a bunch of different distibutions so I thought I'd ask people here which one(s) is good.

I like SuSE 7.2 a lot, but it has a bad time with my hardware(can only do 640x480, and when using the latest kernel, I can't use my aDSL connection)... Redhat 7.1 is also really good...

I have used RedHat and Mandrake, both are easy to load and run. I also heard that corel has a good one.

That's certainly what Linux buffs tell us that their OS does for you. So far I must admit all that happens is that I can see a Penguin on the screen ("sure lots of people want that")

;) Just joking

And you've been getting Arnie past the guards at Edward's by saying "On no sergeant - this is a one quarter scale MX missile . . ." right??;)

You could probably get kovan to introduce you around the gay bars he hangs out at. Think you should keep to the computing though. But hey, if you want to swing your handbag with the other "girls" down "The Tool Shed" go right ahead. Most of us are fairly liberal in here, although that will not extend to threads about date waxing:rolleyes:

*gives Parksie a large kick up the bracket :D :D :D *

Anyway...I tried Mandrake 8. Nice OS but it crashed constantly, not the OS itself but the stuff inside it. interesting but something I can do without. Windows 2000 forever :)

parksie

I tried Mandrake 8 as well, and reformatted 2 days later. Just isn't enough stuff I want to use with it. I'll go back to 98 and the crashes I think.

Are there any without massive system requirements? Ex: Red Hat 7.1 needs like 4 gigs of hard drive space, and the newest version of Corel needs 64 megs of RAM (this all according to CNet). My computer isn't that great, 64 MB RAM is all I have :(

parksie
Jul 20th, 2001, 01:05 PM
Ummm...Linux runs on a 386 with 2MB of memory ;)

X-Windows has massive requirements, but you can use it with a LOT less than 4GB.

scoutt
Jul 20th, 2001, 01:24 PM
the redhat I installed said it only needed 2 gig of HD space for a full install. I didn't install everything and it ran ok. and parksie is right, you can run linux on a 386 with 2mb ram. that is why it is so awesome. :D

sail3005
Jul 20th, 2001, 01:38 PM
what version of linux is that? i have not seen any? Are you talking about w/o a shell installed?

parksie
Jul 20th, 2001, 01:42 PM
OK. The operating system is GNU/Linux - basically the GNU operating system with the Linux kernel underneath. The normal shell to use is bash (bourne-again shell). X-Windows is just a nicety that people who can't hack CLIs use :D

If you just install the basic packages you can really cut it down.

If I'm understanding correctly, it's like DOS is to Windows..

Ok, good

Red Hat 7.1 (http://linux.cnet.com/linux/0-2136876-7-6068244.html?tag=st.lx.1518529.dirlink2136876-7-6068244)

here read this

http://www.redhat.com/support/manuals/RHL-7.1-Manual/install-guide/s1-steps-partitioning.html#S2-STEPS-SPACEREQS

and FYI
by RedHat A custom-class installation requires 300 MB for a minimal installation and at least 2.4 GB of free space if every package is selected

The KERNEL does, but the Window Managers (KDE, Gnome, etc.) suck (especially KDE :)) and slow down your system considerably,

parksie
Jul 20th, 2001, 03:30 PM
That's why I mentioned X

HarryW

Why does KDE suck? Most of the people I know that use Linux use KDE, I don't know why. From what I've seen it looks better than GNOME but then I'm not a Linux buff.

So what's the fundamental difference between the different distributions? Is the kernel the same? Are they all the same version of GNU/Linux underneath? Please explain :)

There's a lot of *nix stuff like shell scripts that I should really learn about for the job I just started, so I'm planning on getting a Linux partition set up on my home computer.

Ok, I downloaded Linux-Mandrake 8.0 but I was wondering before I install it... how can I set up my computer to boot Windows 98 unless I use a boot disk?

scoutt
Jul 21st, 2001, 02:04 AM
when you installl Linux it will install LILO, which is a boot manager and it gives you the choice to boot to Linux or windows.

parksie
Jul 21st, 2001, 05:16 AM
Beware - LILO should go into the master boot record of the disk, and the / partition should start BEFORE the 1024th cylinder.

Wynd
Jul 21st, 2001, 01:49 PM
Grr... I am trying to delete a partition in fdisk but it says "Cannot delete extended DOS partition while logical drives exist."

parksie
Jul 21st, 2001, 02:51 PM
You have to delete the logical DOS drives first.

You *did* remember to back up your data, didn't you? ;)

Wynd
Jul 21st, 2001, 09:58 PM
There wasn't anything on it anyway :)

Hmm...

I formatted my computer and forgot to make a boot disk (i know i know) so now I am stuck using mandrake 8 with KDE, it's pretty good, not that different from windows, but how can I install windows 98 from linux? I tried booting from the CD (didn't work), and running setup.exe on the CD (didn't work). Do I need a windows 98 boot disk?
