    Blind People

Do you know anyone who is blind?

    I don't.

The MP David Blunket is blind and has been from birth. How would be even be able to begin to comprehend things like racism/colour prejudice?

Blair: "Clamp down on racism Dave, me old mate!"
    Blunket: "What's that then?"
    Blair: "er... colour prejudice."
    Blunket: "What's colour?"

There was a snippet in this week's "Computing" (UK IT newspaper) saying that

Barclays Bank's Hatton Cross branch (London?) has a drive-in cash-point which has Braille on the keypad!

I really don't see the point in that.... There's brail on almost every ATM I have seen(most drive through for banks)...

    1) how is the blind person gonna get there?
    2) how will he know what the screen is saying?
    3) how is he going to count his money?
    4) how is he even gonna know where the money comes out???

(this is not an insult to blind people, only to banks)

Yeah, probably political correctness gone berserk; like having wheelchair friendly toilets on every floor of a building even that level is only accessable by stairs.

Kinda middlesex / edge of London for all it's worth - zone 5; right by Heathrow Airport & where I work.

I can't see the point in this thread anyway

You’d be surprised how well blind people cope though. When I was waiting for the bus at uni once, I just turned to ask this guy the time, before realizing that he had a guide dog. I started thinking D’oh, but he had a watch with a flip bit on the front, and he just felt the time from where the hands were. I was pretty impressed, but still felt stupid for asking.
Iain, thats with an i by the way!

Most public machines around here have the little dot in the center if the keypad...

Most people when they say they are blind it doesnt mean that they have lost there FULL vision

Me myself would hate a ATM machine to start talking.... (It would probaly be in a stupid accent too )

People who go around mugging people look for easy targets, thus only getting small amounts.... I would say a blind person would be more vunrable to a mugging.

When im in town there are lots of dodgy people hanging around most of the cash machine when I need to get money, there have been incidents where someone has been mugged just after taking money from the machines.

Well I think they would favor mugging a blind person than a 20 stone body builder, dont you think?

I have always wondered why they have Brail on the ATM's!!!

Why not go the extra step and put brail in cars??

    On the radio dials...Steering wheel...Pedals...etc!

but I think...if that Blind person managed to drive to the atm...he can figure out how to use it w/o brail!

of course a blind guy could WALK up to the atm...but how are they going to find it? Lets add brail bumps to the roads! No wait...!! in NY all the expressways have them already! They vibrate the hell out of your car if you veer onto the shoulder.
    JPnyc rocks!! (Just ask him!)

I could only say such questions are originated from ignorance or lack of knowledge about the blind people's lives. In our community there is a saying that if God takes away something from you, He compensates it by giving something else to you. The same can be applied to the blind people.

    Thank you Mark

Don't you think that its more likely that when the Bank specified the standard ATMs they just asked for 5000 identical ones (with braille etc) and didn't have a special man (out of work management consultant?) whose job it was to go around with wet & dry paper and file off the braille on ATMs that might be inaccessible or too dangerous for blind people

Depend how many braille and audio books, tactile mice* gym facilities for blind people etc etc you have in your normal college Honeybee

(* ones where little pin raise in a patter to tell you what the screen looks like under the cursor)
