I'm just getting started in the SQL programming area. I'm trying to learn how to write custom front-end applications for Sybase SQL Server. But there's no one within 100 miles that knows Sybase SQL Server. I need someone to help me understand how to get VB to send the proper commands to the DB server. Things like:

-how to log in to a db
    -how to access fields
    -creating new db files

and basically anything else that a small business would need to be able to do. Also, if you know of any good books I can read to help me on this, I would appreciate it if you'd tell me about those as well. Thanks.

I'll post a followup later with the ISBN and real title but I've found you can't go (too far) wrong with the SAMS "Unleashed" books. The one for SQL Server is excellent.

    Microsoft SQL Server 6 Unleashed

    ISBN 0-672-30903-3

SQL Server and Sybase share a common heritage, this book is a good place to start.

    Another GREAT book is

    O'Reilly's, Transaction-SQL programming.
ISBN 1-56592-401-0 (Covers SQL Server6.5/7.0 and Sybase Adaptive Server 11.5)
