hey guys,
about 2 months ago i bought Samsung CDRW 12x8x32 (SW-212B) it worked fine until recently it just stopped working.
BIOS still recognizes it, i can see it in Explorer but when i click on it it always tells me that there is no CD in (i do have one in)
what the hell? if it stopped working i would not be able to see it right? or maybe i'm wrong.
i got Win2k SP2, PIII450, 256RAM
i would be very glad if you could help me with that.
thanks

Go into safe mode (if win2k has it) and go to your hardware profile screen (the one you get if you choose properties from the My Computer icon on Win 98/95. Check if there are any unrecognised devices or extra drives. These may be interrupting what's going to and from your drive. I had similar problems with my CDRW and the nice ppl @ Iomega told me to do something like that.

A) Try this firmware upgrade:
http://samsungelectronics.com/odd/support/downloads/dn_7799_en.html
b) Try installing the CDR on a different IDE Channel or a different slave/master.
c) Try upgrading you MB IDE drivers. Can't really help you much there without knowing what type of MB you got
d) Update your CDR software and ASPI drivers
e) Samsung has not been know to make that great of CDRs. They are not low end, but they are not top end either. It might be that your CDR maybe just be broken and cannot find the TOC or cant spin up the CD

Its a long shot but try the top inf update at:
http://appsr.intel.com/scripts-df/filter_results.asp?strOSs=19&strTypes=DRV%2CUTL&ProductID=169&OSFullName=Windows*+2000&submit=Go%21
Motherboard IDE drivers are in the link above
ASPI is a driver that Adaptec made that lots of CDR software use to interface with CDRs. But since you say you have this problem in Windows and not your CDR software this may not help you.
If the above update does not help and changing the IDE channel and/or the slave/master, then you most likely have a broke CDR.

does your cdr spin up when you put a cd in?
are you sure the cd you put in is any good?
try blowing it out with a can of air, but don't use a cd cleaner on it as it will scratch the plastic lens and it will never work properly again.

Well if it makes noise and it doesn't seem to spin then I think that its a good bet that its dead
Hopefully Samsung wont be jerks and will replace it for you
