MS can go screw camels for all I care, but I'm buyin one (simply because I have never owned a console, even a megadrive). Despite there being $1.4 to £1, it will be £299.99 here, because we live in RIP-OFF BRITAIN and these muthas think we don't notice. ******s. And it'll be at leat another 6 months later than Nov 8th.

Regretably, the only competition right now is coming from Sony's engagement with AOL.

I haven't decided which will be worse. Consoles for stupid people, or consoles by stupid people.

And while yes that is true, it is also true that their are hundreds of MS haters that are constantly looking for back doors and bugs in their products. And since MS is such a high profile company, you hear it in the news. Linux has back doors and bad bugs just as much as Windows but they are not publicized like MS'.(Yes I have seen many articles on this). Best thing Linux has going for it is its stable kernel.


Dont get me wrong, I like Linux, I have no problem with Linux. It is it's user base I object to. Nothing more a large group of wannabe elitist and hypocrits. Not all of them. CiberThuG your ok I have no problem with you. You hate MS but you dont run around falunting it like many I have seen. Like cyberwarpy! He really gets on my nerves becuase every other post he does is anti-MS or anti-US.

But they have other competition also. Dont forget the GameCube.

Mmmm, Yeah Microsoft are closed-source, but Nintendo and Sony aren't exactly renown for being openp-source are they? So doesn't that make them all just as bad as each other? (With the only exception being the very cool indrema - but lets face it, it doesn't have the financial clout).

I'm not a big Warpy fan either. He is very much so a jerk.

If there are backdoors in Linux, it is in a particular release. That release will very quickly come under fire within the open-source community. That is the point behind open-source (one of many). We police our own.

There are other alternatives aswell, Linux isn't the only one. There is BeOS and Unix (Solaris, SunOS, BSD, Tru64, Ultrix, HP/UX, AIX, yadda yadda). Someone will shoot me for putting BSD and AIX in that list, but... sorry.

Anyway, the MS bashers usually have a point. I'm just tired of yelling what it is. Besides, I get paid by narrow-minded people to write MS-centric apps.

Personally I'm a big fan of the PS and the PS2. I don't have a PS2, but I'm a fan of it. I like that Sony was very forward thinking with it. I hate that they are teaming up with AOL. The PS2 doesn't have the storage that will XBox a nice innovation (one of few to come from Redmond), but it has very impressive graphics abilities, built in networking, and DVD support.

Unfairly though my opinion of the PS was affected by my affection for WRC and the Impreza. I like Gran Turismo, though its rally side sucks. GT racing is much better than NASCAR.

There is a Linux game platform in the works. The company has folded I think and the project is being moved. I should go check Slashdot.

I think it is neat that an MS employee suggested running Linux on XBox. It has a smaller foot print and requires less resources. I can put RH 7 on my old P-60, but Win2K would refuse to install on something with only 8MB of RAM.

If the OS for X-Box is on the HD, I see no reason why you coldnt replace it with Linux. problem is, I assume it would no longer run the games. Unless maybe they add Direct X support to Linux.

I havent been impressed much with consoles since the SNES, but the X-Box has a good line up of games so I would love to check it out. But unless they come out with some good stuff to beat my favortite PC games, I wont worry about it. I am more into multiplayer games.

from what I heard, you wont be able to put linux on the xbox, because the OS is built in. And its not going to be like windows, the OS will be just for Gaming. But i'm not sure how you will be able to download updates to the xbox if the OS is already built in. I think xbox is going to be a hell of a lot better then PSX2 and GameCube. Does anyone know where I can reserve a copy of it?

I think the MS engineer was suggesting Linux instead of an MS OS. I imagine it will be a slim version of the Win32 kernel. You will probalby be able to update it the same way you update your BIOS, flash ROM.

If specs are ever released (very unlikely) then I'm sure someone will find a way to flash on a Linux kernel. Linux is proving to be a good embedded OS. There are several devices already running it. And there is a Net Appliance hack (iOpener?) that runs Linux. If I remember that is an old 386 with an LCD screen.

Oh, there is a Linux PDA, too. It is still in development, but it will have to be better then Windows CE. Palm OS is better than Windows CE (that's the opinions in the trade rags, I stay away from CE).
