Just happened to read the parable,
"Tower of Babel" (http://bible.crosswalk.com/OnlineStudyBible/bible.cgi?passage=ge+11:1-9)

Now, why should god act like a villain ?
Why should he spoil the unity of his creation ?

In the beginning, He wanted people to "fill the earth". (Genesis 1:27,28) By hanging around there, they weren't doing that. After their languages were confused, they did spread and fill the earth.

That makes the line separting god and evil even fainter.

I think God should have consulted somebody before he/she
created this confusion. Well, If people all over the earth
spoke one language, wouldn't that be good ? We will be
all more familiar to other cultures and can respect them.

Lack of a common language is probably a very small part of the conflicts between civilizations, if any. It would appear that nations back then did understand each other, since their communications weren't limited to just wars.

Also, one would think God knows what he's doing, seeing as he created us and everything. The bible does say he loves peace.

It brings into question his benevolence though, doesn't it?

There should only be one universal language everyone should speak - English.

Well if you think this fictional entity called "God" is a nasty piece of work, you should real revelation !

Goto this site :
http://www.bible.org/netbible/welcome.htm
Scroll down on the left hand side to the last book of the
New Testament ; "Revelation" and read through it.

God only happens to massacre nearly everyone, blow up the planet,
torture a few people, set the horsemen of the apoclypse on us .....

mmmm nice guy ;)

Quote :

Then war broke out in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against
the dragon, and the dragon and his angels fought back. But the dragon
was not strong enough to prevail, so there was no longer any place
left in heaven for him and his angels. So that huge dragon--the
ancient serpent, the one called the devil and Satan, who deceives the
whole world--was thrown down to the earth, and his angels along with
him...

"This is my church,
This is where i heal my hurts"

He is a mean muddy funster Somewhere in the bible there is a reference to incest. I don't think God comes down on them (that would make an awful mess) Holy Semen!!

He's not crazy. he is a practical joker.

Depending on whose arithmetic you use, he created the universe 6-12
thousand years ago. While creating it, he manufactured all sorts of phoney evidence that it was billions of years old.

As an astute theologan once pointed out, when he created a tree that looked 200 years old in the Garden of Eden, he undoubtedly created it with 200 rings. If Adam has cut it down and counted them, he would think the tree was 200 years old. Same with the radioactive elements, light from distant stars, fossils, et cetera. All done as a practical joke on the scientists he knew would be born in our modern times.

I am convinced that quantum weirdness is another of his practical jokes.

There is so much that makes sense only if you realize that god is a practical joker laughing at people in general and the the scientists in particular.

An interesting concept ;)

Guv, There's certainly no way to prove you wrong on that one, if that's what you want to believe.

But, If he want's everybody to believe in him so much (as we're told all the time), why did he go out of his way to do things like this?

If he creates the world in such a way that it looks like he didn't create it (or at least not in the way the Bible says) then how can he blame us for not believing in him?

To give us something to do ;)

I'm not saying that it's not within God's power (if he exists as an omnipotent force) to create the world in such a way that it looked older than it is.

I think it's more likely that the Bible incorrectly accounts for how old the earth is. That was not the intention of the bible anyway.

Well think about it ; if you created a few hundred million creatures, you'd wanna make sure they have something to do or they'd go mad

simonm

More likely that we'd go mad trying to understand why he told us he created the world one way and left 'evidence' that it was created in another.

Still, looks like he gave us plenty of other things to do like killing each other in wars and such like. We (as a human race) just can't seem to get enough.

wow..much has happened since i last visited this thread..

Let me emphasize one thing..
The bible does not specifically state that God created the earth in less than a week

Now let explain how I know this to be so..
In the language Genesis was written in (Hebrew), "day" meant a period of time, not necessarily 24 hours. In fact, Genesis 2:4 goes back and refers to the previous 6 days as one collective day.

This is the kind of interpretation I can deal with. I just don't get people who take the whole thing word for word and say that 'God has been there to keep the meaning'.

plenderj, don't tell me you don't enjoy a good argument, I've never met an Irishman (or woman) who would pass up the opportunity for a good argument ;)
