Setting background color in text boxes

I am trying to find out how I can set the background color for a specific string of text in a textbox or richtext box. An example of this is displaying background colors in mIRC or similar IRC client.

I have tried several ways with textout and drawtext and filling the rectangles with color but they don't update the textbox or stick when the box is scrolled.
