Kinect for Windows
Microsoft officially announced that a new Kinect for Windows device will be released on February 1st along with a commercial license for using the Kinect SDK. This new device shouldn't be seen as simply a toy any more than a computer mouse is a toy.
I posted an article today on Codeguru, "Kinect for Windows: A New Interface for Your Apps." In this article, I touch on the licensing, show a bit of code, and more. Using a few lines of code, You'll see how little code is needed to start integrating with a Kinect! Rather than my repeating everything here, take a look at the article! Click now!

Re: Kinect for Windows
Well at least the licensing terms seem reasonable enough.

One of my programmers from a decade ago (started when he was 15 in high school) - works for MS doing Kinect stuff - I'm so proud of him!!!!

One of his tweets went something like:
"Gesture + Speech is miles above just one or the other. They're two parts of the same language, why ignore either?"

Totally agree. I was bummed that I couldn't get the speach working for my presentation last night. By combining speach and gestures you exponentially increase your ability to control what is happening. For something like a powerpoint presentation, it meant I could have given a voice command to activate watching for the gesture. It would help decrease false postives and would have allowed me to use the Kinect without people knowing whether I was or not.
I plan to work with it some more when time allows to see if I can get the speech recognition on my PC working half as well through Kinect as it does on the Xbox.
Brad!

Re: Kinect for Windows
Of course the problem with all this is that the computer will know when you are "flipping it off" or making other crude gestures because it doesn't do what you want. That can only cause the computer do do worst things if it can now "see" you doing it....

Re: Kinect for Windows
Somehow I just don't see kids b-boying in front of the PC to do their homework actually working out.
Can't wait to see this action behind the counter at the DMV though.
