well, if you're looking for the serious answer...this forum and MS's products(ie VB and VC++) have made my programming experience so much easier. And, some will disagree with me, but I think Bill Gates has earned almost every penny he has and he deserves it...:D

He does deserve all he has earned. People just resent him coz he's got loadsa money. And because some of his products are, shall we say, ****ing annoying. But of course VB is not one of them :D

Hey ... "He Deserves it????"
What on Earth do you mean? Did you know Bill Gates literally STOLE the Windows Opearating System from Apple without giving them anything? Literally all his fortunes is from the things he has stolen from others...
"He deserves it... Phew.... I totally disagree"

yup. Just watched it in fact...
Look at what MS did with Windows, pretty great things, lots of bugs sure, but it can be tolerated.
I think Mac sucks, and that's basically the Apple version of Windows, right, or vice-versa...
If you can steal something, and get away with it, its not wrong in my book:D

I agree, he is a brilliant man. I mean some people profit off the ignorance and stupidity of others, but nothing like he did...He got Apple to show him their code, IBM to buy an OS that he didn't have, and the guy who had the OS to sell it to him. That takes one smart mo-fo :D

XEROX were the guys who actually Invented the GUI OS.. Poor Fellows they failed to patent it. Apple just copied that and in turn was copied by Microsoft.

Mac OS is designed to be simpler than Windows.... It is not a terrible OS.. People who say that they thought that is was crap, just don't know how to use it... Also it is designed for Designers not really for programmers.
Though I also do see you r point that 8.6 is crap.. OSX is much better.. I have been beta testing it for a few months....

MacOS is based on Unix? Hmm...didn't know that. Anyway, the Unix we know and love is that that was developed in the 70s and keeps getting better :) MacOS, on the other hand, may be a good OS, but it's an appalling interface. I could never use anything that doesn't have a command line

Yes but because it is UNIX based.. It is much more stable than M$ (especially Win 95).. But MacOS is also flawed in its simplicity and many PC users try to do complicated things that can be done with a PC and find that they cannot be done on a Mac.. That is why I am happy that I own both and use both on a regular basis! :) :D

What you have to bear in mind is that Bill Gates started off like one of us. And now he's rich.
How it got his wealth is irrelevant, the fact remains that he has it. And he should be respected for that.
But - is he happy?........

I would suspect (as is the case for myself) that we were employed on the basis that we will (and can) work with MS products. Not many developers have a choice what language they use in a given product.
We could all refuse to use Windows or any other MS product but most of us would be out of a job before long.
I don't think Bill Gates should be resented for how rich he is (or though it does raise the philisophical question: should anyone have that much money?) but what does worry me is the power he has over the PC software market.
There is a natural conergence in software that has arrisen due to the need for compatability and interoperability. Microsoft have come out on top and have most of the cards in their hand. They would have to write incredibly bad software to be rejected by the masses (currently they've only managed moderately bad).

yeah I saw it. I also know the real stories and know that about 80% of the movie was a huge exaggeration and some of it was not factual at all. If you get your facts from a movie, well...I feel for you.
The world revolves on taking ideas and pushing them further. Is every company that makes PC's a bunch of thieves since Mac's where basically the first PC? No. I dont think so.

That's the whole point -its a consumer product like a fridge or a dishwasher - you are not supposed to "know how to use it" for general use - if you are then it has failed.
simonm
Apr 11th, 2001, 08:19 AM
That even a fridge or dishwasher (which by the way, I don't know ho to use) requires a common knowledge of how fridges (or dishwashers) work.
You are also assuming that all fridges have the same means of of operating them, it's just the implementation that varies. Obviously this is not always the case.
My point being: You've got to know what the functionality is before you can even begin to intuitively work out how to 'unlock' the functionality.

There seems to be a lot of confusion about Gates wealth here. When we talk of tens of billions we are talking about the value of the equity he holds in the company that )he built himself. So this is not his pocket money - this is part of the market value of the company that he built and is using to dominate the industry.

Hmmmm... Another flaw in your statement? If you were writting open source for the Horiz Market... yes... true, you wouldn't make much money. However, if you were providing a service, by programming Linux X windows apps to businesses and organisations... Imagine how much you would be getting.
Many organisations are making the change to Linux... NEC the other day, announced all its servers + most desktops would become Linux based (about 20,000 in AUS, that's quite a few...) I think all other companies will start realising the benefits and move on to Linux... Don't you? Imagine the deman for Linux custom apps in 2 years time.
Mabye you stop using the word "idiot" every 3 seconds...?

But I suppose if you think about it, take away all microsoft products and start back in 1985 and what would you be doing? Most probably using another company which would be just as big as Microsoft now, and probably crashing just as much.
But what's the moral of this story? (not a deeply philisophical question).
The moral is, something like this proably would've happened if Microsoft wasn't here anyway. We can;t exactly change history so we might as well forget about it and leave Bill Gates alone. He's already getting hassled enough from all the 'other' people who hate him (which is probably a majority of the population).

Fact: Mobiles phones & Computer in a few developed countries such as UK, AUS, USA and Switzerland have become a very common and important tool. However, 1/3 of the world's population elsewhere still haven't even heard a single dial-tone or seen a single computer GUI window.
Fact: There are also many starving POOR people all over the United States. Many organisation such as the foundation for US children are trying to help these people.
Fact: The poor countries of Africa are just struggling to pay the INTEREST on the loans they get from USA. Why is USA charging INTEREST to these poor peope...?
The facts just go on... And just think morally, one man: Bill Gates holds a-lot of the World's money.... :(

Well OK, I do agree on that. Bill Gates has enough people to do that "Dollar a Day" Child sponsoring thing for every child, but face it, if you had that much money, you'd be too up yourself to even think about charity.
{edited:}
He has donated money before, but that was about 1% of what he had at the time. Now he's too rich. Even if he had twice as much money as he has now, he still wouldn't donate any more money. I think he thinks he's too important to be important enough to donate money.

I wouldn't say that mobile phones were a particularly important tool. Popular, yes, but important?

What you've highlighted here is a particular philosophy on the flow of time.
Some people believe (including yourself it would seem) that time is like a river. Throw stones in it if you like and, although you might ripple the surface, you have no effect on the overall flow of the river. i.e. CONVERGENCE
The flip side of that is the view that time is like the "Butterfly effect". The effects of a small change at one moment rapidly spread out, drastically changing the final outcome. i.e. DIVERGENCE
Perhaps if Bill Gates had been stopped, there would have been no dominant player now. :)

Simonm, I guess you are right.
But if you hate Microsoft/Bill Gates, stop using VB, stop using Windows, stop using Office, and then see how easy your computeris to run, without a word processor which can check your grammar and spelling, without an operating system which supports probably something over 90% of all PC software availible.
Of course there are competitors, but people chose Microsoft for a reason. A good reason. A reason so good I dunno what it is, but it must have been good if they are the top PC software company. Bill Gates deserves some of the money he deserves, but not all, because stealing is wrong, very very wrong*.
Except if you are robbing from the corner dairy down the road if you have absolutely no money or food to feed your family, because you are doing the right thing by providing goods for the poor.

Sure there are word processors, games for Linux, but Windows has much greater support, not to mention the fact that I simply prefer its interface.
