Hi, I'm new to programming and have a couple of questions. What's the best business model for consumer based applications? Charge up front, let the person try the software for a little while then charge, let it be free and then hope people donate to the project, rely on ads embedded in the software (through the Internet)? What have you tried and what has worked? Then there's if you don't want advertisement then you have to pay model.

I saw this company http://dvdvideosoft.com/ gives it's software away for free and says it gets enough money from people donating so they don't need to charge. I see virtues in every model and I don't think I need that much money to live so my ideal would be donations/ads. I also think many times you can get more money/exposure by giving things away for free (like classical concerts, more money from donors than from charging admission, true story).

Let me know your thoughts and thanks for your help!
