I need an application that is connected to a Access or SQL Server database. The application must take text input from a serial port and store this in the database as well as generate reports from the information. It is also desirable for the application to be able to receive information from JD Edwards World software running on an AS400. I have limited experience with VB and but have written applications in C, C++ and Java. I do not wish to spend a lot of time creating the application and was curious if VB would be the quickest way to fulfill my requirements. Any comments?

Hi there,
Well if you are using access, visual basic is good because it is made by microsoft, and they port very well to each other, hope that helps, its not much.

If you don't want to spend a lot of time developing this app, VB is probably the quickest.

VB6, C++, SQL, HTML, XML, ASP

VB and Access the best combination.
mate,
VB is the best tool for Developing database applications for whatever backend it may be either Access or SQL. And I dont see any problem with other databases such as Oracle etal. If u wanna save time go for VB. u seem to have programming experience in C++, then programming in VB is not that tough mate. Go for VB live Happily...VB is our Darling..

i have always been told that VB is supposed to be used for database applications and any regular programs are better, smaller, and faster when made in C++ so for your databse app you should go with VB. But that is just my oppinion for what it counts

Very true, but when you look at large corporations, they rarely use VB as a front-end. I'm not dissing VB, I Love VB...

Yes, I know of a couple of private, contained companies that use a VB front end for their DB's. Mainly because they don't have all the time in the world to wait for upgrades once their needs change (and they always do). Now if the company has several branches, and they all have to connect to a main data server, the speed and power of C++ is the way to go.

ADO controls can be used in any language (Go COM!). If you want a quick (and fast) front end, use C++ Builder.

...quick and fast. errr.. Im tired =) "If you want to build a front end that is fast, quckly..."
