[NOT RESOLVED - JUST CLOSED] vista wakes from sleep
Well this is a frustrating problem. Seems every 15 minutes after putting the pc to sleep it will wake up. I've searched online for similar problems but none of the answers I've found have solved my problem. I've looked at the devices that are set to "allow this device to wake pc" and the only ones listed are my mouse & keyboard. It does not list my nic as one unless I go to its properties and select "wake on magic packet". Also I've looked at the event logs and when it shows the event when the pc woke up it lists wake source as unknown. However, when I put the pc to sleep & I myself click the mouse or keyboard then the event will list the source as either of those. My final steps are to unplug the keyboard & mouse separately & see if the pc will wake without one of them. But after that I'm out of options. Any one have any ideas?

Well I unplugged the mouse and it still woke up. I unplugged the keyboard and it didn't wake up. I need to test it out a second time to make sure it wasn't a fluke.

Which, power plan are you using, Balanced, Power Saving or High Performance?
edit:
From Vista help:
Change, create, or delete a power plan (scheme)
A power plan is a collection of hardware and system settings that manages how your computer uses and conserves power. Power plans can save energy, maximize system performance, or balance energy conservation with performance. The default power plans—Balanced, Power saver, and High performance—meet most people's needs. But you can modify settings for existing plans or create your own plan.
To change settings for a single plan
You can change the following settings for individual power plans:
Set your computer to go to sleep after a specified period of inactivity. For more information, see Turn off a computer: frequently asked questions.
Adjust the brightness of your display.
Choose when to turn off the display during periods of inactivity.
Click to open Power Options.
Under the plan that you want to change, click Change plan settings.
On the Change settings for the plan page, choose the display and sleep settings that you want to use when your computer is running on battery (mobile PC only) and when it's plugged in.
To change settings that affect all of your power plans (system settings)
In Power Options, some of the links in the left pane open System Settings. Changes on this page are automatically made to all of your power plans. By changing system settings, you can do the following:
Help secure your computer by requiring a password to unlock the computer when it wakes from sleep.
Choose what your computer does when you press the power and sleep buttons on your keyboard or mobile PC frame or, with some mobile PCs, when you close the lid. For example, when you press the power button, the computer can either do nothing or it can shut down. If the computer supports sleep and hibernate, pressing the power button can also put the computer into one of those power-saving states.
Click to open Power Options.
In the left pane, click Require a password on wakeup, Choose what the power button does, or Choose what closing the lid does (available only on mobile PCs).
On the Define power buttons and turn on password protection page, choose the settings that you want to use when your computer is running on battery (mobile PC only), and when it's plugged in.
Click Save changes.
For more information about system settings, go to the power options article on the Microsoft Help and Support website.
You can change the amount of time the computer is inactive before going to sleep by.
1. Click to open Power Options.
2.Choose when to turn off the display (check the settings here).
3. Change advanced power settings.
4. Sleep -> After sleep.
5. Specific how long the computer remains inactive before going to sleep.

Thanks for the reply but I don't think you understood my question. I know how to put my pc to sleep. However, I can't keep it asleep. It wakes up on its own. I use a custom power plan.
Unplugging the keyboard a second time didn't keep the pc from waking up. However, I unplugged the network cable and sure enough my pc slept for 4 hours until I decided to awake it. I had a feeling it was the culprit but just can't figure out why when it doesn't have the option to turn the pc on.
[vb5 & starting to move to vb2008] I appreciate the help I get from everyone. Thank you.
1. Control Panel
2. Device Manager
3. Network Adaptor
4. NVIDIA nforce etc - open this
5. Power Management
* Uncheck: "ALLOW THIS DEVICE TO WAKE UP THE COMPUTER"
Try doing the above for the keyboard and mouse too.

No that setting won't work for me because it doesn't show up for my NIC. It does on my mouse & keyboard but those are not the problem. I have the latest drivers for the nic. I'll just have to wait for an update I guess.

Go into the device manager and find the ethernet card.
1) Right click on it and go to Properties. Find the "Power Management" tab.
2) 'Uncheck' all checkboxes in that tab including the "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power."
Now try it...

Did you see the screenshot of my nic card? It doesn't have those options. However, after I uninstalled the intel "advanced" driver options I did get the original boxes back but the pc still wakes up.
[vb5 & starting to move to vb2008] I appreciate the help I get from everyone. Thank you.
I've checked the event viewer but there really isn't anything useful. It tells me wake source unknown. The only thing I can find in the event viewer that happens around the same time the pc wakes up is that "windows firewall was unable to notify user that it blocked an incoming connection". However, it is the lsass.exe service which is the account management service that triggers this event and according to MS it is normal to see this event.
I have AVG antivirus and it doesn't state at what time it updates itself. The only user defined task is that for google updater and it is set to run at 1:40pm every day and every hour after that. However, it doesn't have "wake pc" under conditions. None of the other MS tasks have "wake pc" enabled either.
As far as IMs I have yahoo, aim, msn & trillian. None of them load at start up. The only one I use is Trillian. I would gladly take a screenshot of the services running however there are too many (54) and would require more than 5 screenshots to list them all. But I did a command line output of the processes.
I have to test unplugging the cable from the nic one more time to see if it wasn't a fluke yesterday that it didn't wake up when I did so.

Put your laptop to sleep and the moment it wakes up, immediately bring the task manager and then export the task like the way you did it in the tasks.txt above...
Lets take it from there...

It's not a laptop, it's a regular pc. Attached is the output. I did try unplugging the nic cable once again and the pc remained in sleep mode until I woke it 3 hours later. So it has something to do with it. The "allow the pc to turn this device off" for the nic is obviously not working & some program/service is causing the pc to wake up.

The mouse and keyboard solved the problem for me! Have you tried them?

Could you be more specific? What about the mouse or keyboard? I've unplugged both separately when putting the pc to sleep & the pc still will wake up.
After I did what I posted in #5 with the mouse and keyboard that solved the problem for me with getting the pc to stay asleep.
So, I end up with "Allow the device to wake the computer" disabled on:
Keyboard
Network adapters
and
Mouse

Ok I see what you mean now. However, I want to wake the pc with the mouse or keyboard. Also, unplugging the keyboard & mouse is basically the same thing as disabling those options since they can't be used and it still woke up. And I stress again, when I unplug the nic cable the pc remains in sleep mode.
[vb5 & starting to move to vb2008] I appreciate the help I get from everyone. Thank you.
I don't know why but the mouse and keyboard on their own interfere with sleep mode, that is you enter sleep mode then the computer wakes up again within a couple of seconds.

Sorry about the laptop . I have a laptop... It's been months now, I have touched a desktop
Anyways, I have checked the text file and it looks normal. I am also now sure that the ethernet card is the culprit...
Are you sure you have unchecked all the checkboxes (At least the screen shot says you have)... even when you scroll down?

i noticed you messing with the settings in windows. Have you tried changing the settings in the bios? The main s1/s3 settings are in there, and there may be something in there overriding windows settings.
Yes, I made sure the boxes were unchecked for them. Here is the screenshot of the the nic properties once I uninstalled the intel advanced options. Also are screenshots of the event viewer. I've noticed that if I don't do anything when it wakes up it will go back to sleep in 2 minutes. Then it will wake up between 10-15 minutes and go back to sleep in 2 minutes. I also see a bunch of dhcp client requests. In the security events the only one that happen around the same time are windows firewall not being able to tell the user it blocked an incoming connection.
I am going to unplug the cable from my cable modem/router that goes to the switch that the cable from my pc goes to. I am curious to see if the modem/router is some how waking the pc. If that doesn't work I will make sure windows defender is properly turned off since it can't be uninstalled in vista.
Last but not least I have checked the bios settings. I will check them once again since I don't have them memorized. But from what I remember the "wake on lan" in the bios was for S5, which means to turn it on when the pc is completely off.
[vb5 & starting to move to vb2008] I appreciate the help I get from everyone. Thank you.
Wow now I'm really stumped. I unplugged the modem/router from the switch and left the nic of the pc connected to the switch and sure enough the pc didn't wake up . What is going on? The event viewer showed the "dhcp client" event at the time I started it up so it can be ignored since it seems to be normal. As well as the windows firewall event it also shows up at the time I woke up the pc. I'll have to unplug the modem one more time to see if it wasn't a fluke.
[vb5 & starting to move to vb2008] I appreciate the help I get from everyone. Thank you.
Yup, if I unplug the modem from the switch or if I unplug the pc from the switch my pc will not wake on its own. Now I have to figure out what type of traffic is causing my pc to wake up and why the nic isn't going to sleep like it should.
[vb5 & starting to move to vb2008] I appreciate the help I get from everyone. Thank you.
Have you checked to make sure software you are using isn't causing the problem? This thread might be of help even though it's for Win7.

Well I'm sure some program/service is waking the pc even though the nic is supposed to not wake the pc up. However, determining the culprit is going to be hard. I'm going to have to uninstall programs I've installed one by one which won't be fun now or later when I reinstall. I just recently started using sleep mode so it's been a few months since I got my pc and I've installed several programs since that time to be able to pinpoint the culprit.
I've checked my router's firewall and it seems all traffic is coming from the pc to the outside. However, most of them are to port 53, which is my isp dns server. There are several going to port 80 and I guess I'll have to do a reverse dns lookup.
On a side note I've gone to the bios & disabled "wake on lan from s5". I'll check if that does the trick.
[vb5 & starting to move to vb2008] I appreciate the help I get from everyone. Thank you.
there should be a setting in there "enable hybrid sleep" Try changing that one and see if it behaves differently afterwards.
However... It looks to me like the problem is a running program as well. A bunch of them have wake privelages by default. For example the media center service will wake the computer when you have internet connectivity to download guide listings. It is probably something like that since it only does it when you have internet. Try booting into safe mode with networking with everything connected and see if it behaves.
"enable hybrid sleep" in bios? Haven't seen that. However, there was that setting in power options in control panel but after I turned off hibernation it disappeared. It's just "regular" sleep.
I have vista business so no media center. I was thinking of safe mode as well. I'll try that later on today. However, it won't help much since I will still have to find out which service / program is causing the issue if it doesn't happen in safe mode.

Thanks for the link. However, I found that link a week ago when I started to try to find the answer to my problem. Unfortunately, I've already tried or checked everything they state on that site without success.

So you tried step 5! It didn't list the programs that might interfere with "sleep mode"?
Edit:
Have you tried a system restore? If you have and it didn't work then I don't think programs that you have installed are the problem since they will change for each system restore.
When was the first time you experienced the problem? Before the 17th of January this year? Create a system restore point and restore your system to an earlier date before you had the problem. List the things installed before you first encountered the problem. Compare those changes to your current programs and see which are different.

Yes, I've already tried step 5 and it only lists devices enabled to wake the pc. It doesn't list programs although I wished it did! The only devices that show up are the mouse & keyboard; unplugging them didn't stop the pc from waking on its own.
No I haven't tried a system restore for a few reasons. I disabled it a while back because I don't like space wasted on my drive. I enabled it in the beginning of January I believe. I've had my pc since May 2009. System restore won't do much good.
I've just recently started using sleep mode on my pc. I normally just either left it on or turned it off. Back in May when I used sleep it wouldn't come out of it. Vista would freeze. Eventually it learned to not freeze during sleep but I didn't care for sleep mode. So just within the last 2 weeks I've started to use it again and this is when I found out it doesn't stay sleeping. Only thing I remember is that when I wasn't using sleep mode my monitor was still set to turn off after 3 minutes of inactivity but it would turn on by itself randomly but I never gave it much thought.
[vb5 & starting to move to vb2008] I appreciate the help I get from everyone. Thank you.
Maybe something went wrong with Windows! Reinstall, maybe?
Edit:
Before you do that try Driver Detective to fix any problems with the computer drivers.
Try going to control panel
Administrative Tools
System configuration
There you will find all services/programs that run at start up on your computer. There is even a diagnostic tool that might be useful.
Just a thought try disabling Windows Defender and see if that makes a difference.

i was using that as an example program, not as a solution. It would only happen once per day if that was the program. Also i am sorry i wasn't clear, i was referring to power options, not the bios. Hybrid sleep is basically a cross between sleep and hibernate. It doesn't actually shut the processor off but it does power down memory so it dumps memory to the hard drive.
