Opportunity to learn server-side Java

Much downtime here the last few weeks. Been using JavaScript out of necessity with ASP ASP.Net, but a class at the local JC is offering the java class this spring.

Is it worth taking the class to learn this language to increase my skills and land a job or prospects. Is it useful on the "beginning" programming rung for companies? I'd figure it would help me with OO and with understanding C#.

What can I walk away when learning this. Mobile apps?

It all depends on what your course plan is. java mobile might be fun to learn you know

Is Java mobile really common and popular? I guess I would have to read about it.

I know they have mobile SDKs for .NET...but not sure what industries are doing what and what is common.

Anyways, I think any new programming experience is good in the long haul.

Actually, I best at databases (stored procs, queries, and also maintenance) due to the ever demand of filling in where there is no real DBA!!:eek:

Well .Net only runs on Windows mobiles so it's not that common. Java on the other hand runs on most mobile devices.

If you're looking for something totally new try scala or any other functional programming language. Or php if you're into web
