Red face Small doubts about IP Address

    Hi,
My PC is connected to net using Asianet Broadband Connection(in Kerala) and using Modem(by CISCO).
The question is, I heard that all computers will have an IP Address.
So, will that IP address change on each time I connect to the internet ?
If I connect the same net connection to my laptop, will it have the same IP as my PC ?

    It will simple for you...

Re: Small doubts about IP Address

There are two types of ip addresses, static and dynamic! The static address remains the same and will not change whereas a dynamic ip address does.

    Edit:

If you are talking about your laptop and pc being on a network then that network being connected the internet then yes it will have one ip address instead of two. However, the ip address is the address that the router has not of the individual computers on the network.

    You mean the modem ?

I didn't have any device as router !

    CISCO 2100 Cable Modem -> That's what i have !
I think router is used to share net connection. In the above post, I mean to say that, my PC is connected using a cable. And if I unplugged that cable from my LAN port and connect it to the Laptop, will it produce any change ????

Re: Small doubts about IP Address

It depends on the cable modem software and the way the cable company is managing it.

Usually the cable provider "provisions" the modem with one or more addresses depending on your account (it is quite possible to have 20 IP addresses and no router behind a modem, but they charge for it).

They do track the MAC of the device plugged into the modem though, and plugging in a second PC could easily result in a different IP address. You may even see a delay if the cable provider has things set up to go through a reset when a new MAC is seen.

Re: Small doubts about IP Address

My connection provider is Asianet Dataline. Inorder to connect to the net, first I have to open any internet explorer and then type any valid address like www.google.com. Then, my service provider's page will be loaded and I have to type my username and password. Then click Ok. thus I login. After finishing my surfing, I need to click Logoff button in this page. Meanwhile this page should not be closed during the entire usage...

Re: Small doubts about IP Address

It all depends on your internet provider - for example on my home network the IP address that is assigned to my modem generally only changes once or twice a year. However, some people I know find that theirs changes almost every time they restart the modem.
