I am new to game and 3D programming however am very interested in the subject.

Can any one tell me where i should begin, and suggest a few books I should consider.

In my opinion, OpenGL runs faster (looks better too), but thats on my machine (it is a 533 w/savage4(bad) and it can do 1152x864 16bit 50 fps.) - Half-Life

I would recommend that for 3d... but,

DirectX is...

-supported more
-has more updates
-more documentation
-more flexibility
-other things u can do with it
-ddraw
-dsound
-dplay
-etc, etc

BOTH ARE GOOOD

please dont kill me for my idiotic rantings

Yeah I think for VB you may as well stick with DirectX, since you're stuck with the Windows platform anyway. if you just want 3D graphics, OpenGL has a reputation for being easier to learn, and most people say the reason Direct3D gets so many updates is because it's maturing, which OpenGL has already done. At the moment, AFAIK they are pretty much equal in terms of performance.

You generally see more jobs advertise requiring DX than OGL, but to be honest the API isn't the hard part to grasp, it's the 3D maths.
