API to set color for SStab Control

I am trying not to kill myself over a request from above to set the color for a SSTab control to a required color scheme. Does anyone know of a way to change the background color of the Tab? The control property only changes the color behind the tab not the tab itself. I assume there is an API to do it but I haven't a clue as to where to even start coding such a thing. Any help on this will be greatly appreciated.
