How do I determine connection speed?

Does anyone know how I can detect the connection speed of a user who hits a web page? I know there are some components which can do it such as BrowserHawk but was hoping there was a pretty straightforward way to do it.

I don't think it is an easy task.
I have checked w/ a few of my super friends and they made it sound fairly complex.
