Can I use API to send a file to a remote comp. in a LAN?

Hello everyone...

Is it possible to create a VB application to send a file (eg. word.doc) to a remote computer in a LAN environment??

I'm involved in some industrial automation project that requires me to send a file from the master computer to the remote computer that controls a particular machine.

Does it involve FTP and stuff like that or simply, I can use API. Please help... thanks
