    SPACE GAMES

    GROUP GAMES

    PROTECT YOUR PLANET
This is the age-old balloon-stomp game. Each child blows up a balloon (their planet) and it is tied around their ankle with string. The children then attempt to pop other kid’s balloons by stomping on them, while at the same time protecting their own. The last child with their balloon wins.

    ROCKET LANDING PAD
    Equipment:
    • 1 egg (rocket) per team
    • 1 boiled egg for demonstration!
    • 20 straws per team
    • 30cm of sticky tape per team
    • Measuring tape
    • Watch/timer
How to play: Pre make a landing pad using the materials and demonstrate with a boiled egg. Kids in teams build a landing pad for their „rocket‟ out of straws. They will be given 10minutes to construct the best landing pad they can. Once all landing pads have been created test the pads by the group holding the pad and then dropping the egg from a height of 10cm. The eggs that survive make it to the next round of 20cm. Keep increasing the height until all landing pads have failed. For those dedicated engineers have a team member put their head under the landing pad! (Unless of course they are allergic to egg!) Don‟t forget to reveal the „secret‟ to your engineering feat!!

    LIFESIZE BATTLESHIP
Split your group into two teams. Setup the room with a divider down the middle (like a sheet) and play life-size battleship. Have people lie down on the floor like battleships and use a beach ball as the bomb. One person from each group is designated the thrower. If the ball hits someone on the full, their ship sinks. The object of the game is to knock out all ships from the opposing team.

    THE SHOE GAME
This is a good short game to help your group mix it up a bit.
Sit everyone in a circle, tell everyone to take off their left shoe, and throw it in a pile in the middle. Then everyone randomly grabs a shoe from the pile and put it on. Once everyone has a show on, they then have to find the person who is wearing their shoe, and stand next to them.
The end result is you end up with circle or two.

    CATERPILLAR RACE
Form teams of equal size, with five to seven players on each team (3 also works). Have kids think up one-syllable names for their teams. Then line teams up next to each other behind a starting line. Instruct team members to place hands on the shoulders of the team members in front of them and race to a finish line according to the following rules of movement: The first person in line may hop one step forward. Continue down the line until the last person in line hops one step forward. After the last person hops, he or she must shout the team name. Then the whole team may hop one step forward at the same time. Repeat this process to move the caterpillar along. Players must keep their hands on the shoulders of the team members in front of them at all times during the race. Players may move forward only by hopping one step forward with both feet at once. If a team member breaks any of the above rules, it must return to the starting line and begin again.

OBSTACLE RELAY + NOUGHTS & CROSSES
    Equipment:
    • Big sheet of butcher paper/white board with connect four grid drawn on it.
    • 2 sets of 10 coloured circles in 2 different colours (or one coloured circle for each team member) Or noughts & crosses set
    • Items for kids to jump over/under/through for obstacle course.
    Players: 6-12 How to play:
    1. Set up 2 obstacle courses that are identical and run parallel to each other with the butcher paper/white board connect four board at the end.
    2. Divide kids into 2 teams. Each child with a circle, and a pile of spares at the start of the course.
    3. Kids run through obstacle course and place their piece on the connect four board and then run back to their team to tag the next person.
    4. This repeats until one of the teams have connected 4 of the circles in a row.
    5. To extend the game you could make it connect 5 or 6.
The first team who sit down once their 4 circles are connected wins.

    CLUMPS
Equipment: Nil Players: 10 – 10,000 How to Play:
    1. A leader stands in front of the group (on a raised platform if playing with a big group)
    2. Have all children spread out in the space you have to use
    3. The leader yells out a number and all children must get into a group with that many people in it
    4. Anyone who doesn’t get into a group is out and stands around the perimeter of the area
    5. The leader then tells everyone to move around – they may ask them to skip or jump
    6. The leader once again calls a number and the process continues to repeat itself
The winners are the last people left (this may be 3,4,5 etc..) – the people who form the last group.
    MOON WALKERS
In advance spray paint black some empty tin cans – 2 cans for each team/child. Carefully make 2 holes in the bottom equidistant from each other and then thread a 2 meter long piece of string through both holes and then tie the ends. You should now have a tin can with a large loop of string which should be about 1 meter long. Have the kids step onto the cans (1 for each foot) and hold onto the loops of string. Then they must walk around a course as quickly as possible. If in teams have each team member do it and the first team to complete the course is the winner.

    MESSY GAMES

    ALPHABET SOUP
    What you will need:
    • plastic
    • alphabet soup tin per team
    • platter per team
Split your group into several teams. Give each team a platter and a few cans of alphabet soup. Each team must sift through the goo to spell words. You can give points a number of ways:
    • words to do with the biblical theme of loving God and loving our neighbours 1 point per letter, bonus points for creativity.
    • Words to do with space theme 1 point per letter, bonus points for creativity.
They are given a time frame to do this (maybe 2 minutes or so). No curse words or body parts.

    CHEEZEL FACE-OFF
    What you will need:
    • Can of whipped cream
    • Cheezels
Arrange several pairs of students up front. One partner gets whipped cream spread (or sprayed) all over his or her face (make sure an adult does this, and watch out for eyes!). The other partner stands back about 5 feet and throws Cheezels on the whipped creamed partner's face (they stick!) in a given amount of time. Whoever ends up with the most Cheezels on his or her face wins.

    SNOWLESS SNOWBALL FIGHT
This is a fun game to play if you like having snowball fights, but do not have any snow. You'll need white pantyhose and flour to make the snowballs and how many depends on your group size (about 1 to 1.5 per person). Preparation You take the pantyhose and cut the two legs apart from each other. You take a large paper cup, fill it with flour and put it into the bottom of the pantyhose leg. Then you tie off the pantyhose with two square knots on top off each other, cut the pantyhose in between the knots and you have a snow-less snowball. Repeat the process where the knot is still in the leg until you have used it all. You should get about 8 per leg from "queen size" hose. Now you have snowballs that do not hurt too bad when they hit you and you can use throw them over and over again. With these snowballs you can play any number of games.
How to play Have the group break up into two teams with a brave leader, or should I say target for each team. Split the area of play in half and have the leaders positioned a good ways away from each other in a designated place with only a little room to move around (a circle 1.5m across is good). Then have the teams try and hit the other team's leader. If a person is hit with a snowball while on the enemies side, they have to drop their snowball and return to their territory. The team that ends up with the leader that has less flour on them is the winner. To make the game a little more interesting, surprise everyone by entering water balloons in as ammunition half-way through the game.
    BOBBING FOR MARSHMELLOWS
    What you will need:
    • Old style garbage can/tub
    • Water
    • Apples
    • Large bowl
    • Flour
    • Marshmellows
    • Cloth/towel for clean up
This game begins just like the regular Bobbing for Apples. However, immediately after bobbing for apples, the person bobs for marshmallows in a bowl of flour. The results are messy, so make sure the floor is covered with plastic for quick and easy clean up

    BUILD YOUR OWN SPACE MARTIAN
For each contestant have a bag full of assorted Martian accessories such as a hat, scarf, mittens, a carrot etc. and a pair of safety goggles, a can of shaving cream and a set of clothes to go over their clothes for protection. Each team has a designated amount of time to use the shaving cream to cover their "snowman" (the contestant) and put all of the accessories on. The team to make the nicest looking snowman wins. Lay tarp down and have towels handy! A hose if you are outside is also ideal!

    SPINNING BROOMSTICK RELAY
Equipment: 1 broomstick per team of 6-8 1 bucket of goop/slime per team 1 target per team 1 cone per team
    How to play:
    1. In teams take turns to spin around holding a broom stick upright looking up at the end of it, 10 times.
    2. Then drop the broomstick and run to a bucket at the other end of the course dipping their hand in goop and then throwing the goop at the target.
    3. Once they have hit the target, run back and tag the next person in the team.
    4. Repeat until the first team have completed the relay.

    SLIPPERY LIMBO
Lay a tarp down on the floor. Take some dishwashing detergent and spray it down on the tarp. Add a little water, and you have a slippery surface. Then have the students to line up to do some limbo. If you feel like the floor is too hard, do this activity outside or lay some mats under the tarp.SPACE GAMES
