I mean so long as it does not violate the AUP?

No.

That is the only answer I can give to your very broadly asked question :).

Social groups should relate to the focus of this site in some manner. We will allow some social groups that are tangential, but they really need to keep with the spirit of VBForums overall.

For example, I'd allow a Halo Warriors group even though it is not VB because it does fit within the spirit of the site. We won't allow a "Beer drinkers" social group because it is too chit chat. We'd prefer that most social groups be more relevant to the site and programming though.

I was actually thinking of say having a project that would grow via a social group. So for instance in my next iteration of x:Light I would like to have a second programmer, a HTML guru and an ASP.NET dev to help out an I felt a social group would be the best way forward. Also people may be encouraged to play with the source more rather than just banging it into the code bank and then asking someone via PM to help.

Or am I missing the point of social groups I.E should they be more like a WPF lovers group sort of thing?

In my opinion collaborating on a community project is a very good use of groups on this site.

Cool so my next question is how to set one up?

From the menu bar on this site:

Community | Social Groups

then 'Create a New Group'

However, I am not sure which usergroups have permissions to create groups. Brad or Joe would have to answer that.

It must be when you are a member with over 2000 posts.

More posts are required! I have more than 2000 posts and I don't get an option to create a social group.

Yes, but that is only to join a group that has already been created!

Edit:

The option to create a group is not listed for me!

Edit II:

Found it! It is on the social groups page.

Nope I still don't got it so it must be for power posters.

Since VBForums is mainly for the programing languages such as VB, VB.Net, C++, etc would I be allowed to start a group for the web languages html, javascipt, etc?
