Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close?

Ok, so whenever I open the file on my desktop that has all my tv shows and movies in it I get that message. The Send Error Report or Don't Send kind. Then the file is closed by this problem. Then I try and open it again and the same message pop ups.

So I sent the Error Report and then clicked the More Information link and it took me to a webpage explaining the cause of the problem. It said that "This problem was caused by XviD" and I am assuming that is so because I just installed the ConvertXtoDVD software on my computer so I could burn avi files onto DVD.

And if I choose to ignore the message and continue leaving the file open i get this message "DrWatson's Postmortum DeBugger has encountered a problem and needs to close" and I don't even know what that is.

Does anyone know how to fix this?

well obviously it is causing major system errors to the extent that the os is closing all programs. So no.

Could it be possible that this file is corrupt or bad? Does it not crash if you just run the app or run it on a new file?

Make sure your system is completly updated from Windows Update. Do an uninstall and then reinstall of ConvertXtoDVD but make sure all your non-essential programs are not running.

Uninsalling a popular program like ConvertXtoDVD shouldnt be a "solution".

it sounds like one of those free homemade programs that converts your video, but does it terrible. maybe i should research it

I noticed that it is 140 dollars, at this price, torrenting the program is very popular. if you did torrent it, make sure that it does not have a virus of some sort

Ya it seemed to be virus free, AVG didn't pick anything up and spybot hasnt picked anything up either. it doesnt close down my entire system it just closes down my folder with all my videos in it. I open the folder, it pops up, closes the folder. ill try uninstalling and reinstalling i guess.

could also be the xvid codec as well could be corrupted try reinstalling the codec or try using a codec pack such as k-lite or Combined Combined Community Codec Pack

at a guess i would say you've got thumbnail view enabled. You are going to have to change that. You can either set all folders to same view, or browse to the affected folder (with cmd.exe) and delete the hidden files.

I uninstalled convertxtodvd and the problem still persists, im gonna try a system restore and if that doesn't work im out of ideas

Start button > Run > type in cmd.exe and click OK. Its a DOS console window which will allow you to browse to the affected directory without Explorer so it shouldnt crash.

change directories like this:
c:\>
c:\>cd windows
c:\windows>cd "C:\program files"
c:\program files>

once in the correct directory you can view the hidden files like this:
attrib *.*
the files that appear with a H next to them are hidden files. Now type this:
attrib *.* -s -h -r -a
now delete the files that were originally hidden like this:
del filename.db (where filename.db is the name of the file you want removed)
be careful! Files deleted this way do NOT go in the recycle bin.

It is likely that your xvid decoder is corrupt.
Uninstall any codec-related programs and install K-Lite Codec Pack.

only problem i ever had like this was from installing a coded pack. An older version of k-lite actually

I use nimo codec pack now and have had no issues.

I had this same issue. At least the part about explorer crashing while trying to preview files. Try shutting off the thumbnail preview, that helped for me. Also try playing your videos with VLC Media Player, it's free. To prevent explorer from crashing I'm 99% sure you will need to re-install the XviD codec.
Be warned though that the crashing could be caused by a problem with the current version of XviD, which seems to be the version that Convert XtoDVD is using. If you update it, that program may no longer function properly.

Basic troubleshooting is performed by doing things that aren't necessarily wanted, but that are reversible. I understand that you don't want to remove Convert XtoDVD, but if you do and the problem goes away, you know that's the problem. If the problem doesn't go away, you can always re-install it right?

Same with that codec solution I just mentioned - installing a newed codec may screw up the software, but you'll always be able to re-install it if that problem isn't resolved.
