[RESOLVED] Upgrading Crystal Reports
Hi all!
I have been using Crystal Reports for Visual Basic to design and deploy reports with apps developed using Visual Basic 6 Professional. The exact Crystal Reports version information is as follow: Crystal Reports for Visual Basic, Product 4.6.1.0 (CRW32 4.6.1.116). Even though this version of Crystal Reports has its limitations it suited me perfectly until recently.
In the quest to further compliment a new (freely distributed) app I need to enhance the reporting facilities in particular with regard to the following aspects:
1. The ability to hook Crystal Reports onto Microsoft Access databases created using Microsoft Access 2000 and later Microsoft Access versions, and
2. The ability to empower the end user to utilise Crystal Reports (even a scaled down version) to write, generate and save their own reports.
Considering the abovementioned aspects and the fact that the development is done using Visual Basic 6 Professional I enquired with a Crystal Reports guru (who works for Business Objects and in particular the Crystal Reports division) who informed me that I shall be able to achieve these goals using any Crystal Reports version after, and including, version 7 providing it is a Developers Edition of the relevant Crystal Reports version.
Can anyone be so kind and verify that the proposed solution will work?
Thanking all in advance,
@

Re: Upgrading Crystal Reports
Yes I would say believe your source. If you purchase any of the developer editions, those always include the components to integrate with development tools such as visual studio. The free crystal component inculded in visual basic 6 or the .net visual studios is always an older usually less capable version than what is current with Crystal Reports.
I have used visual basic 6 with both crystal reports version 8.5 and 10 using some of the components included in the developers editions. I have not attempted version XI or 2008 with vb6 however.
Look to see if they have a trial of the developer edition on their website that you might be able to use and see if it will meet your needs for your write, generate and save implementation.

Re: [RESOLVED] Upgrading Crystal Reports
Thanks for the reply Ducky! I have since confirmed with the local Business Objects offices what the do's and don't's are.
Busy procuring Crystal Reports 8.5 Developer, but will be glad if anyone is interested in selling a second hand copy of Crystal Reports 8.5 Developer or Crystal Reports 7.x Developer.
Thanks again!
