Well testing can be done in many ways and highly depends on the kind of project currently being worked on. If you want some general knowledge of testing, I'd suggest picking up a book regarding it. It'll help when creating test plans, questionaires, using focus groups, etc.

I quick link found for starters which might be useful is the wiki entry for software testing...

Like kasracer mentioned, a lot depends on they type of project your working on, and what business practices are in place for the company you work for with regarding to testing.
ps. In the References section on wiki (at the bottom) there was a good link to the Testing Phase in Software Testing. I think it was the 5th one down.

Being a developer in the 'usual' sense, I am not that fond of testing extensively, but with integrated unit testing in VS 2008, it feels better now. Just thought that I'd throw that in...

Testing utlities are also in 2005 but even with 2008 the testing utilities and built in features in the IDE are only available in the high end version of VS, which is VSTS.

For built in features of VS here is the breakdown of what is available in the VS TS version.

If you want to do unit testing there is always N-Unit :)

I've come from programming into a test manager role and can answer this in one word: both.
Though you've chosen a profession now, my 2 cents worth is that both roles are equally important. Software companies need skilled developers in order to build software solutions in the first place, but software testers are needed equally as much in order to spot errors - and there are/will always be some no matter how exceptional the developer is (ok yes I am the 1 exception to this rule and do have perfect code, but I'm excluding myself here).
Career wise from what I can see both professions have specialist and guru areas which can earn the big money, and both professions would probably lead to that status in the same amount of years. I believe development is easier to get started in general. The next step above both professions, the realms of the IT project managers, I'd have to say testing may prepare someone better for as you would tend to write specs, manage people and costs at a slightly earlier time than a developer would.
